Whitecaps Lose Fourth Straight

CLINTON, IA -The West Michigan Whitecaps struggled to get clutch hitting as they lost to the Clinton LumberKings by a score of 3-2 Monday afternoon at Ashford University Field.

The LumberKings opened the scoring in the contest when Gus Craig laced a line-drive solo home run to right field in the second inning to give Clinton a 1-0 lead. An inning later, Derek Hill drilled a run-scoring triple into the right-center field gap to score Cam Gibson and tie the game at one. In the third and fifth innings, the 'Caps stranded a runner at third base before Alex Jackson grounded a two-run single up-the-middle to give the Lumberkings a 3-1 lead after five innings. In the following inning, a run-scoring single by Arvicent Perez drew West Michigan within a run in the sixth before stranding a runner at third base again in the sixth and eighth. They would be retired in-order in the ninth, sending the Whitecaps to their fourth straight loss, and ending their six-game roadtrip with a 2-4 record.

Sandy Baez (5-8) labored through 4.2 innings and allowed three runs in suffering his eighth loss of the year, while Pedro Vasquez (1-0) earned his first win with the LumberKings with five innings of one-run baseball. Kevin Gadea pitched the final four innings while allowing just one run to record his first save of the season. Will Maddox went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk to lead the Whitecaps offense in a losing cause. Luis Liberato reached base in all four of his at-bats with a single, three walks along with a run scored to lead the LumberKings. The Whitecaps left seven runners on-base, and went 1-for-10 in the contest with runners in scoring positions. UP NEXT

The Whitecaps return home for a six-game homestand beginning with a three-game set with the Peoria Chiefs Wednesday night at 7:00p.m. Pitcher Spenser Watkins gets the start for West Michigan, while the Chiefs start righty Jake Woodford.
