Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Following a complete game shutout in his last outing, Ben White pitched another gem, leading the Lansing Lugnuts (31-35) to a 5-1 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks (43-23) on Thursday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The 24-year old White (Win, 4-3) retired the first eight batters he saw, and the Lugnuts gave him an early lead on an RBI single by Carlos Ramirez in the bottom of the first inning.
White kept South Bend scoreless through the first five frames with seven strikeouts and the offense gave him another run in the bottom of the fifth on Christian Lopes' RBI double to push Lansing ahead 2-0.
After tossing a seven inning complete game shutout against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Saturday, White's scoreless inning streak stretched to 12 innings before the Silver Hawks got to him in the sixth inning.
Back-to-back doubles by Pedro Ruiz and Andrew Velazquez gave South Bend their first and only run of the game. With two on and one out later in the inning, White capped his outing by striking out Roidany Aguila and Rudy Flores to get out of the jam with the 2-1 lead. Aguila and Flores finished 0-for-8 at the plate for the Silver Hawks, striking out all eight times.
White tossed six innings in total, allowing the lone run on just three hits. He issued two walks and struck out a career-high nine batters to earn the win and lower his season ERA to 2.79.
On the mound for South Bend, Kyle Winkler (Loss, 1-1) went toe-to-toe with White through five innings, but faltered in the sixth. The Lugnuts offense sealed the win, as Dalton Pompey singled in two runs with the bases loaded in the sixth frame and Chris Hawkins' double added another run in the seventh.
Winkler went five-plus innings, giving up four runs - all earned - on 10 hits. He struck out three and walked three.
The Lugnuts complete the first half of the season with a three-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. The series opens up on Friday at 7:05 p.m., with Roberto Osuna (2-2, 2.96) on the mound for Lansing. He will take on Bowling Green lefty Sean Bierman (2-2, 2.08).
