Last week, the Wheeling Nailers felt the grind of the ECHL schedule, as they finished a stretch of five games in eight days. Wheeling had a successful week, posting a 3-1-0 record to jump into sole possession of third place in the North Division. The week began on Tuesday with the annual Education Day Game. For the second year in a row, the goals were pouring in at a high rate during the morning tilt, as the Nailers jumped out to a 4-0 lead on goals by Garrett Meurs, Nick Sorkin, Cody Wydo, and Ryan Segalla. Brampton ended up making a game out of it, by scoring three times in the second period and twice in the third, but markers by Josh Shalla and Jordan Kwas were too much to overcome, as Wheeling held on for the 6-5 triumph. Friday's game also featured lots of scoring, but unfortunately, not much for the Nailers. Christian Hilbrich was the lone player to light the lamp for Wheeling, who saw its five-game winning streak end with a 6-1 setback to the Indy Fuel at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. On Saturday night, the Nailers got back to their winning ways against the Quad City Mallards. Adam Krause started the scoring in what turned out to be a three-point night for him, as he also assisted on tallies by Meurs and Brett Stern. The winning strike came off of Stern's stick with 3:04 left in the third period. Sunday afternoon followed a similar script to Saturday's game, as Wheeling and Quad City clashed again. Shalla opened the scoring for the visitors, before the Mallards took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. In the second period, Michael Webster knotted the score, before Cody Wydo's last minute marker put the Nailers ahead 3-2, which turned out to be the final score.

The Nailers have won seven of their last eight games and nine of their last 11, improving to 9-4-1 on the season - their best 14-game start since 2011-12. Wheeling has netted a power play goal in eight consecutive games, and there has been at least one goal on the man advantage for or against in 12 of 14 games this season. The Nailers posted at least 48 and 45 shots respectively in their two wins at Quad City, marking the second and third times they have reached that number in 2016-17. Indy's opening goal on Friday ended a streak of 279:15 in which Wheeling was either tied or in the lead. Three players got to celebrate scoring their first professional goals last week - Ryan Segalla on Tuesday, Christian Hilbrich on Friday, and Michael Webster on Sunday. JP Anderson won the games on Saturday and Sunday, as his record ran to 4-0-0 to start the campaign. Kevin Schulze dished out four assists on Tuesday, after a three-point day the previous Sunday, giving him seven total points during the home-and-home series against Brampton.

This Week

Sat. 11/26 Greenville Swamp Rabbits @ WHEELING NAILERS, 7:05 Sun. 11/27 Greenville Swamp Rabbits @ WHEELING NAILERS, 5:05

This week, the Wheeling Nailers will face a significantly lighter load of games, as they will get to enjoy Thanksgiving, before hitting the ice on Saturday and Sunday at WesBanco Arena. The opponent will be Wheeling's first of the year from the South Division, as the Greenville Swamp Rabbits make their only visit of the season. Due to building complications on opening weekend, Greenville has played the fewest games in the ECHL to this point, as it enters the week with a 4-4-2 mark in ten contests. The Swamp Rabbits will make up for that quickly, as the tilts in Wheeling will complete a stretch of four games in five days. Last weekend, Greenville split a pair of games in the Sunshine State, falling 7-4 to the Orlando Solar Bears, before rebounding to edge the Florida Everblades, 4-3 in a shootout. Defenseman Joe Houk leads the way with seven points for the Swamp Rabbits, while Brandon Alderson and Ahti Oksanen have both tallied three goals. Jeff Malcolm, Mackenzie Skapski, and PJ Musico are the three men patrolling the crease. Wheeling defeated Greenville in the lone head-to-head match-up last season, 5-1 at WesBanco Arena on February 26th. That was the first meeting in which Greenville was known as the Swamp Rabbits, after changing over from the Road Warriors during the summer of 2015.
