Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings closed out a 4-game Western Hockey League home stand Friday night with a 7-1 victory over the Saskatoon Blades.

Florida Panthers' prospect Jayce Hawryluk scored twice and set up three others as the Wheat Kings moved ahead of Red Deer and into second place in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference standings with a record of 35-16-2-2.

Hawryluk's second goal - a shorthanded effort in the third - was his 100th career goal and the 19-year old Roblin product now has ten goals and 24 points in his last ten games.

His line with second year center Nolan Patrick and rookie Ty Lewis finished the night with five goals and 12 points. While Patrick ran his goal scoring streak to five games, Lewis scored a pair of second period powerplay goals for the Wheat Kings, who outshot the Blades 56-20.

"Playing with (Hawryluk) and (Patrick), they're great players and they're very skilled. Hawryluk gave me a great pass on the second goal and Patrick threw me a great pass cross-ice on the first one," Lewis told Bruce Luebke on CKLQ's post-game show. "It helps playing with those guys, it keeps the game simple. It was a good win tonight."

Tanner Kaspick, who played his first game since suffering an upper body injury in December and Duncan Campbell rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who will travel to Regina to meet the Pats on Saturday night.

Campbell's goal - the Wheat Kings second third period shorthanded goal - was the Lucky 7 goal and provided over 4,700 fans in attendance with a "free" 2+2+2 breakfast (with the purchase of a beverage) at Smittys Restaurant. Fans displaying Friday's ticket will have until 11am daily (between now and February 19th) to take advantage of this offer.

Four of the Wheat Kings goals were scored by former AAA midget Wheat Kings and all seven came off the sticks of Manitoba born players.

Former Brandon left-winger Braylon Shmyr scored in a losing cause for the Blades in what was his first game played at Westman Place since last month's deal that saw Shmyr and Colton Waltz go to Saskatoon in exchange for Mitch Wheaton, Schael Higson and a second round bantam draft choice.

Friday's game, which attracted one of the largest crowds of the season, featured a special Salute to Manitoba 4-H. Over 400 4-H club members from across western Manitoba attended the game, courtesy of Enns Brothers.

The Wheat Kings, who enter Saturday's game with a six point lead on second place Prince Albert in the Eastern Division, will return home for two games this coming week. In addition to hosting Kootenay on Wednesday, Brandon will host the Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday in what will be the 3rd Annual "Pink the Rink" Night, in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.
