Connecticut Whale News Release


The Whale (25-21-4-2, 56 pts.) have won a season-high five straight games, and are unbeaten in regulation in six straight (5-0-0-1), after sweeping three home games this past weekend. Connecticut knocked off the Portland Pirates 4-1 Friday night, scored a 2-1 overtime win over the Norfolk Admirals Saturday night and scored two goals 16 seconds apart late in the third period Sunday to upend the Manchester Monarchs, 3-2. Cam Talbot allowed a total of only two goals on 51 shots Friday and Saturday, and Brandon Segal scored the overtime winner Saturday and set up the two late goals that won Sunday's game. The Whale have climbed to a season-best four games over .500 and into sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

This week:

The Whale finish a four-game homestand this Wednesday night, February 20, hosting the St. John's IceCaps at 7:00 PM at the XL Center, and then hit the road for games at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Saturday (7:05) and Syracuse on Sunday (3:00).

Wednesday, February 20 vs. the St. John's IceCaps at the XL Center, 7:00 p.m.

* This is the last of four games on the season between the Whale and the IceCaps, and the second of two meetings at the XL Center. The Whale won the last two games between the two teams, both up in St. John's, after the IceCaps took the first clash of the season series October 14 in Hartford, 3-2, in the second game of the season.

* St. John's is 22-281-2 for 47 points and in 14th place in the Eastern Conference, eight points out of a playoff spot.

* IceCap captain and leading point-scorer Jason Jaffray (12-18-30 in 42 GP) had a three-game goal-scoring streak (4-1-5) snapped in a 6-1 loss at Portland Sunday.

Thursday, February 21 - Whale "Winter Carnival" at the Russian Lady, 191 Ann Uccello St., Downtown Hartford, 5:00-7:00 PM

All the Whale players will be on hand for the Whale's "Winter Carnival" event, which will benefit Gaylord Specialty Healthcare. All ages are welcome. An admission charge of $20 includes a happy hour-style buffet and tickets for two complimentary beers (for those 21 or older). Whale players will be serving drinks from behind the bar, and fans can challenge the players to games of EA Sports NHL 2013 as well. There will also be a silent auction. Tickets to the Winter Carnival will be available for purchase at the Whale's home game this Wednesday, February 20 at the XL Center, at the Prize Den behind section 124, and also can be purchased at the event. Saturday, February 23 at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza), 7:05 p.m.

* Former Whale Chad Kolarik has 3-5-8 in 11 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton since his acquisition by the Penguins organization January 24.

* This is the second of two meetings on the season between the Whale and the Penguins. Connecticut blanked Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 2-0 the first time the two clubs saw one another, January 6 in Hartford.

* The Penguins begin the week one point behind the Whale in the Eastern Conference standings, at 26-22-2-1 for 55 points, tied with Hershey for the conference's last playoff spot.

Sunday, February 24 at the Syracuse Crunch (Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter), 3:00 p.m.

* After a stretch in which they won only two of ten games (2-7-0-1), the Crunch swept three road games last week, to improve to 29-14-2-4 for 64 points, one point behind first-place Binghamton in the East Division.

* Syracuse is a league-best 19-6-0-2 on the road, but only 10-8-2-2 at home.

* Crunch goaltender Riku Helenius was named last week's CCM/AHL Player of the Week, after posting two shutouts and stopping 80 out of 81 shots in Syracuse's three victories.

* The Crunch's Tyler Johnson (23-22-45 in 48 GP) is tied for fifth in the AHL in points and ranks fifth in goals.

* This game finishes off a two-game season series between the Whale and Syracuse. The Crunch took the first meeting 4-3 in overtime December 1 at the XL Center.

Whale Tales:

The Whale's next Friday-night home game is March 1, when the Bridgeport Sound Tigers invade the XL Center for a 7:00 game. At each and every Friday Whale home game this year, fans can enjoy $1 hot dogs and $2 beers until the end of the first intermission.
