Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - Right-hander Craig Westcott (1-1) earned his first Double-A win as the Richmond Flying Squirrels dumped the Bowie Baysox, 4-2, in front of 8,814 on Sunday night. Westcott limited the Baysox to three hits over seven innings as Richmond earned a split of the four-game series.

The Baysox did open the scoring against Westcott in the third inning, plating an unearned run for the game's first lead. Westcott issued a one-out walk to Greg Miclat and threw errantly on a pick-off attempt at first base to advance him to second. Miclat moved up to third on a groundout and scored for a 1-0 lead when Danny Figueroa singled into center field.

The Richmond response came in the fourth against Bowie right-hander Ryohei Tanaka (4-10). Thomas Neal sparked the rally with a one-out infield-single. Brandon Belt doubled behind him to put runners at second and third with one out. The double for Belt extended his personal hit-streak to 12 games. Tanaka walked Conor Gillaspie to load the bases and Clay Timpner chopped an infield-single to the right of the mound that scored Neal to tie the game, 1-1. On Timpner's single, Tanaka and first baseman Joe Mahoney collided. The collision bloodied the mouth of Mahoney and forced his departure from the ballgame. Tanaka continued and allowed the Richmond go-ahead run when Ryan Lormand sent a fielder's choice grounder to the shortstop Miclat.

Bowie wasted no time tying the ballgame as Brandon Waring led off the fifth inning with a mammoth solo-home run to left field off of Westcott. Waring's 16th of the season knotted the score, 2-2.

The Squirrels grabbed the lead again with another run against Tanaka in the bottom of the inning. Darren Ford doubled into left field with one out and a batter later, Neal ripped a single into right field to plate Ford and put Richmond back in front, 3-2.

Richmond took a parting shot at Tanaka in the sixth as the righty conceded a triple to Gillaspie to lead off the inning and then called it a night. Timpner singled off Tanaka's replacement, lefty Pedro Viola, to score Gillaspie for a 4-2 lead.

Tanaka was charged with four earned runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out two as he lost for the fourth time against Richmond.

Westcott lasted seven innings, matching the longest outing of his career. He earned his first Double-A victory, and also established a new career-high with nine strike outs. He was charged with two runs - one earned - on just three hits.

Rafael Cova worked the final two innings to earn his 16th save of the season. Cova issued a walk, but did not allow another Bowie hit. He struck out Waring to end the ballgame.

The Flying Squirrels open a three-game series with the Trenton Thunder (New York Yankees) at 7:05 PM on Monday night at The Diamond. RHP Michael Main (0-1, 9.00) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Lance Pendleton (7-4, 3.97) for the Thunder.
