(Hagerstown, MD - The West Virginia Power lost 2-1 to the Hagerstown Suns in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Tyler Beckwith singled home Tres Barrera for the walk-off win with one down in the home half of the eleventh.
West Virginia had Luis Escobar on the mound in the series finale. Escobar entered play with 118 strikeouts and was tied for the South Atlantic League lead with former Sun McKenzie Mills. Hagerstown countered with Matthew DeRosier. The Suns right-hander retired the side in order in the first and second innings. Escobar limited the Suns to one walk over the first two innings.
Yoel Gonzalez broke up the dueling no-hitters with a solo home run in the top of the third. Gonzalez hit a 2-2 from DeRosier over the right-center field wall into the Power bullpen for a 1-0 West Virginia lead.
Angelo Le Bruna bunted his way on in the bottom of the third inning to end Escobar's no-hit bid. The Power right-hander walked two and hit one over the first six innings, striking out seven. Hagerstown evened the score at one in the bottom of the seventh when Barrera walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a single by Oliver Ortiz.
Hagerstown loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning on a single and a pair of walks, but Julio Eusebio struck out Nick Banks on a 3-2 pitch to end the threat. In the top of the ninth, West Virginia left two in scoring position.
In the bottom of the eleventh, Barrera double and was sacrificed to third by Banks. Tyler Beckwith singled off Pasquale Mazzoccoli to drive in Barrera for the Hagerstown walk-off win.
Escobar struck over seven over seven innings in a no-decision. Mazzoccoli (1-1) took the loss after allowing his first run in South Atlantic League play this season over eight-plus innings. Steven Fuentes (4-3) pitched the final three innings to earn the victory.
The Power start a four-game, three-day series in Lexington on Monday evening with a doubleheader. West Virginia returns home to start a seven-game homestand on Thursday, August 3.
