West Virginia Black Bears Drop Two out of Three to the Staten Island Yankees

The Black Bears fall to the Staten Island Yankees in their three set game set on the road. Both teams came into the series undefeated and met for the first time since the 2015 New York-Penn League Championship.

(June 22, 2016)- Game one was off to a slow start in the first as each side was retired in order. The Black Bears got an early lead in the top of the second with a triple by DH Jordan George and a sac fly that would put them on the board, 1-0.

The Yankees evened the score 1-1, in the bottom of the third with a run brought in on a line drive to left by 2B Jose Rosario.

With the middle of the Black Bears line up due up, RF Hunter Owen advanced a runner on first to score with a ground ball single to third that put the Black Bears on top again, 2-1.

1B Albert Baur furthered the Black Bears lead in the top of the fifth with a line drive double to right scoring runners on second and third giving the Blacks Bears a three run lead, 4-1.

The Black Bears continued their scoring in the top of the sixth with a single by C Kevin Krause bringing in a runner on third now giving them a 5-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Yankees would fight back to take the lead over the Black Bears starting off with a double by Rosario scoring a runner of first, 5-2. Back to back singles would allow the Yankees to score again making the score 5-3. A passed ball by Krause would place runner on second and third brining up 3B Mandy Alvarez whose sac fly would make it a one run ballgame, 5-4.

Holding off the threat from the Yankees, the Black Bears were able to come back in the top of the ninth to score two runs starting with a triple by CF Sandy Santos , a single by SS Stephen Alemais scoring Santos (6-4) and single to right by Baur that would score Alemais putting the score at 7-4.

The Black Bears held off the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth ending the game with a final score of 7-4.

(June 23, 2016)- The Yankees were able to get on the board early with a double to center by SS Ricardo Ferreira, a walk and a double to left by 2B Jose Rosario bringing a run in (1-0). A single and a sac fly would bring in two more runs putting the Yankees on top 3-0.

With bases loaded in the top of the third, 3B Jordan George singled on a fly ball to center, scoring a run and making the score 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, starting pitcher for the Black Bears, P James Marvel struggled as he hit three batters, bringing in relief P Neil Kozikowski whose first wild pitch would allow the Yankees to score, 4-1.

The Black Bears kept up their efforts in the top of the fifth with doubles by 1B Albert Baur and DH Will Craig that would score Baur going into the bottom of the fifth with a score 4-2.

Down by two runs, the Black Bears kept the bats going in the top of the seventh with singles by LF Ty Moore and SS Tyler Leffler and a groundout to score to Moore and move Leffler to third, 4-3. With George up to bat, a wild pitch would score Leffler tying the game 4-4.

The Yankees line up would be too much for the Black Bears defense in the bottom of the seventh as they would score four runs, making the score 8-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Black Bears gave up a walk and two hits allowing the Yankees to bring in two more runs, 10-4.

In the top of the ninth, the Black Would Bears would try to rally to no avail, losing their first game of the season with a final of 10-4.

(June 24, 2016)- The Black Bears and the Yankees held their defense through three innings and it was the Black Bears who started the lead in the top of the fourth. C Chris Harvey brought in a runner on third with a double to right making the score 1-0.

The strong defense from both teams continued through the top of the sixth until the Yankees pitching began to struggle giving up a walk and a single to right by RF Matt Diorio that would drive in a run, putting the Black Bears up 2-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Black Bears defense struggled giving up a walk and two doubles that would even the score 2-2.

The Black Bears got their bats going in the top of the seventh, with bases loaded, 3B Will Craig's sac fly would bring in a run, pushing them on top, 3-2.

The Yankees fought back in the bottom of the eighth with a line drive to left by 2B Mandy Alvarez that would bring in a run and once again, evening the score 3-3.

Both teams held the opposing through the bottom of the ninth and went into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, the Yankees gave up two hits but seized the Black Bears threat going into the bottom of the tenth. The Black Bears pitching struggled, walking three batters and allowing the Yankees to score on a wild pitch giving them the 4-3 win to take the series.

The Black Bears will be back at Monongalia County Ballpark tomorrow, June 25, at 7:05pm for game one against the State College Spikes and WVU Night.
