Toronto Marlies News Release

The Toronto Marlies played their fair share of free hockey last week, heading beyond regulation in three straight games and ensuring a point in each contest during a tough, late-season three-in-three.

The week started off with the final school day game of the season against the visiting Utica Comets. After falling to a 2-0 deficit in the opening period, the Marlies charged back starting with Pierre Engvall's goal less than two minutes into the second.

With under 10 minutes left to play, Vincent LoVerde tied things up to force overtime in a 2-2 game. Adam Brooks was the overtime hero as he went top shelf to end the game with just 32 seconds left in the extra frame and gave the Marlies their fifth straight win.

The Marlies and Comets faced off again the next night in Utica, and it was another hard-fought game that required extra time. Martin Marincin opened the scoring for the Marlies in the first, and LoVerde scored his second of the weekend to extend the leadmidway through the middle frame.

On this night, the Comets responded with a pair of goals to tie the game before the end of regulation. The game would go to a shootout and the Comets would win 3-2.

Finishing out the three-in-three, the Marlies headed to Rochester on Saturday night for a high-scoring, back-and-forth contest. The two sides combined for three goals in the first five minutes, with Mason Marchment and Chris Mueller scoring for the Marlies. Rochester responded with three straight in the second and led by two heading into the third.

Jean Dupuy, Mueller and Frederik Gauthier fired back with three quick goals in the first ten minutes of the third period but a late goal for Rochester with just over a minute remaining forced the game to overtime. In the extra frame, the Americans were able to score first and win 6-5.

With a point in Friday's game, the Marlies secured the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy for best points percentage in the American Hockey League and now hold a 52-18-2-2 record.
