Weekly Update: Chivas Usa To Hold Youth Team Tryouts This Friday In Bell Gardens

CHIVAS USA TO HOLD YOUTH TEAM TRYOUTS ON THIS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20 IN BELL GARDENS: Chivas USA will be holding tryouts for its pioneering Youth Teams this Friday, Nov. 20 at the Bell Gardens Sports Center in Bell Gardens. Players will have a chance to show their skills in front of Chivas USA's Youth Team coaches at the tryout, and will be for players born from '91-'96 on Nov. 20 at 5:00 p.m. PT. Spaces in the tryout cost $35 in advance and $40 on the day of the event, and spots are limited, so advance registration is highly recommended. ZACH THORNTON NAMED IN MLS BEST XI, PICKING UP THIRD MLS AWARD OF 2009 SEASON: Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton earned his third MLS award of the season on Monday as he was named to Major League Soccer's 2009 Best XI, an annual award recognizing the League's top 11 players at each individual position on the field - one goalkeeper, three defenders, five midfielders and two forwards. Thornton, who is Major League Soccer's Goalkeeper of the Year and Comeback Player of the Year for 2009, led MLS in both goals against average (0.87) and shutouts (12) this season. He is the fourth Chivas USA player to be named in the MLS Best XI, following Brad Guzan and Jonathan Bornstein in 2007 and Sacha Kljestan in 2008. The Best XI members received the most votes from the media, MLS players and MLS coaches and general managers.

BORNSTEIN AND KLJESTAN TO FACE DENMARK ON WEDNESDAY WITH UNITED STATES: Chivas USA's Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Kljestan are currently with the United States National Team in Denmark, readying for a match on Wednesday against the Scandinavian country. Both players played in the United States' last match, a 1-0 loss at Slovakia on Saturday, with Bornstein playing the full 90 minutes and having a penalty called against him for a foul in the box, and Kljestan entering the match as an 82nd minute substitute. Wednesday's match against Denmark kicks off at 11:30 a.m. PT and will be broadcast live on ESPN Classic and ESPN2.

CHIVAS USA DEFENDER SHAVAR THOMAS WITH JAMAICA FOR SOUTH AFRICA FRIENDLY ON TUESDAY: Shavar Thomas has joined the Jamaican National Team for the squad's friendly match against South Africa in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The match takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, one of the locations for next summer's 2010 FIFA World Cup. Thomas was called into the squad later than most of the rest of the players due to the MLS Cup Playoffs, where he recently played the full 90 minutes in the Red-and-White's 1-0 loss to the Galaxy on Nov. 8.

MIDFIELDER BOJAN STEPANOVIC UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL KNEE SURGERY: Chivas USA midfielder Bojan Stepanovic, who suffered a dislocated patella in the match against Chivas de Guadalajara on Sept. 22, has undergone successful surgery on the knee. The procedure, an arthroscopic debridement and lateral release of the right knee, was performed by Team Doctors Michael Gerhardt and Bert Mandelbaum on Saturday in Santa Monica. Stepanovic is expected to be sidelined up to three months while recovering from the surgery.

YOUTH UPDATE: CHIVAS USA U-18 AND U-16 TEAMS FACE LAFC CHELSEA THIS SATURDAY: Chivas USA's U-16 Team earned a 1-1 draw with the LA Galaxy U-16 Team this past Saturday, while the Red-and-White U-18 Team fell by a 4-1 score to the Galaxy. The U-16's continue in first place in their division, owning an overall record of 5-2-2 with 18 goals for and just seven goals against. Next up for both teams is a match against LAFC Chelsea this Saturday at Cerritos College, with the U-16's kicking off first, at 2:00 p.m. PT, followed by the U-18's at 4:15 p.m. PT. The rosters and full schedule for the Chivas USA U-18 and U-16 teams, which compete in the 2009-10 U.S. Soccer Development Academy, can be found here for the U-18's, and for the U-16 Team here.
