Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Newport Gulls fell to the Ocean State Waves 4-1 on Monday night in front of 1,826 fans at Cardines Field.

The Gulls, no-hit through seven innings by Waves pitching, including five perfect frames from starter Jordan Fulbright, managed just two hits total in the contest, plating their first run in the bottom of the ninth inning with two out on an RBI-single by second baseman Cole Fabio.

While Fabio's hit broke up the shutout, the Gulls offense couldn't figure out the Waves, aside from earning eight walks in the game, including six in the final two innings.

Meanwhile, Ocean State struck early in the contest, when returning Wave Ryan Blanton launched a solo homer to right to lead off the second inning off of Gulls starter Andrew Gist. That opened the door for two more Waves runs, as eight men came to the plate, giving Ocean State an early 3-0 lead thanks to RBI singles from Nick Angellini and Chris Hess.

The Waves tacked on a run in the fifth thanks to back-to-back singles, followed up by a Austin Upshaw sacrifice fly, to give them a 4-0 lead over Newport on Tiverton Little League night at Cardines.

The Gulls, now just 1-3 on the season and 0-2 at home, will look ahead to a five-game stretch of baseball through Saturday. On the road Tuesday in Mystic at 6:05, Newport will send right-hander Jackson Goddard to the hill to face a Schooners team the Gulls are already 1-1 against this summer.

On Wednesday, Newport returns home to open up interdivision play with a 6:35 p.m. contest vs. the North Adams SteepleCats. Gates open at 5 p.m. for St. Joseph's Community Night.

After a trip to Holyoke, Massachusetts to face the Valley Blue Sox on Thursday, the Gulls are home again on Friday for Salve Regina University Night vs. the New Bedford Bay Sox at 6:35 p.m. They wrap up the week Saturday at Ocean State at 6:30 in Game Three of the Pell Bridge Series, before the team's first official off day of the season on Sunday.
