Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview
October 31, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Second Time Around
This weekend, the Black Hawks will see two USHL Western Conference adversaries for the second time each. The Black Hawks defeated the Sioux City Musketeers 4-1 behind three points from Ethan Johnson on March 20th. One week later, Waterloo was upended by the Fargo Force, 3-1. In the latter game, Ryan Bischel made 21 saves for Fargo and Grant Hebert scored the winning goal. Both games are on the road this week; the Hawks visit Sioux City first on Friday before continuing on to North Dakota Saturday. Despite a 5-1 loss Sunday against the Central Illinois Flying Aces, Waterloo's eight road points tie for second-most in the league.
October in Retrospect
The Hawks finished the first calendar month of the 2017/18 regular season with a breakeven 4-4-0 record. Although Waterloo's 2.13 goals-per-game tie for 14th in the USHL, the team is second in goals against at 2.38. Goaltender Jared Moe is currently third in the league with a 1.78 goals-against average; his save percentage ranks fifth at 93.5%. Offensively, the Hawks saw balanced scoring during the month, with four different players (Jackson Cates, Ben Copeland, Ethan Johnson, and Garrett Wait) each recording six points. Cates had three goals, while Wait contributed five assists. Johnson owned the club's best plus/minus differential during the month at +5.
The Cates Meow
Jackson Cates has five points during his last five appearances. His steady production included a point in each game over the weekend (two goals, one assist). Cates is currently the most prolific Black Hawk in power play situations, where he has recorded three points this season. If the forward can earn a goal or assist during a fourth consecutive game Friday at Sioux City, it will match the longest point streak of his USHL career.
Power Play Breakthrough
Bobby Trivigno scored a power play goal during the third period of a 5-1 loss to the Central Illinois Flying Aces on Sunday. The goal was Trivigno's first in the USHL and ended the team's three-game power play drought. Waterloo had 16 power play chances in between special teams scores. Two of the Black Hawks' four power play goals this season were counted against Sioux City on October 20th.
Weekly Recap
Two first period goals by the Fargo Force were more than the Hawks could overcome on home ice last Friday during a 3-1 loss. Saturday, Waterloo outshot Madison 32-14 through two periods but held just a 1-0 lead. The Capitols broke out for five unanswered in the third. The Hawks fell by the same 5-1 score on Sunday versus the Central Illinois Flying Aces during a game played in Peoria.
