Waterloo Black Hawks

Setting Attention Toward the Siouxland

The Black Hawks will make a weekend road trip to Sioux City and Sioux Falls this Friday and Saturday. The game against the Musketeers at Tyson Event Center to open the expedition will mark the first meeting between the teams since last season's Western Conference playoffs. Sioux City edged Waterloo in a best-of-five series which went the full duration; the Musketeers were later defeated in the Clark Cup Finals by the Chicago Steel. Sioux City is now led by Luke Strand, who played for Hawks coach P.K. O'Handley as a member of the North Iowa Huskies. The tilt with the Stampede on Saturday will mark Waterloo's second visit to Sioux Falls. The Hawks opened up the year with a 4-2 victory there on October 7th. That result is the Stampede's only regulation loss in four games so far this season.

Goaltending Tendencies

Through the first two weekends of action in the United States Hockey League, the Black Hawks' goalie combination of Jared Moe and Matej Tomek have posted the USHL's best goals-against average. Waterloo's mark stands at 1.01, outpacing the second-place Lincoln Stars (1.33). This weekend's games feature opponents with GAA figures currently among the league's top six: Sioux City is at 1.92 (4th) and Sioux Falls comes in at 2.20 (6th). At the end of last season, the Hawks were mid-pack in the USHL at 2.59 (ranked 8th of 17 teams).

Healthy Home Crowd

Attendance for the Black Hawks' 2017/18 home debut was the highest of any opener since 2011. A crowd of 2,813 was on hand for Saturday's game against Dubuque. Six years ago, 3,036 fans came to the rink for the first home game of the season against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. In the five years in between, crowds for the initial home contest of each season had averaged 2,117.

No Wait-ing

During three games this season, veteran forward Garrett Wait has three points (one goal, two assists). His first of two assists on Friday was the 50th point of his USHL career. Currently the Black Hawks' leading scorer, Wait finished fifth among players on last season's roster with 38 points.

Weekly Recap

The Black Hawks were on each side of a shutout while playing a home-and-home series against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Friday Waterloo won with a 2-0 score behind 30 saves from Jared Moe in the 18-year-old goalie's league debut. Jack Drury and Matej Blumel scored the Black Hawks goals. Saturday, Waterloo outshot Dubuque 26-23 but came up short in a 1-0 decision. In 2016/17, the Hawks earned six shutouts while only being blanked three times.
