Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview
January 15, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Déjà Week
The locations are reversed, but the Waterloo Black Hawks see the same three teams they faced New Years' week. Tuesday and Friday, the Hawks go on the road to meet the Lincoln Stars and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Waterloo topped the Stars 10-2 on December 31st and fell to the RoughRiders 6-1 on January 5th. The closest contest of that week was against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The rematch of that 5-4 Waterloo win at Mystique Ice Center will be played Saturday at Young Arena.
Stenglein's Super Start
One week ago, the Black Hawks acquired J.T. Stenglein in a trade with the Sioux City Musketeers. During the time he has been in Waterloo, the 19-year-old forward has three goals and four assists and a +5 plus/minus rating. Facing the National Team Development Program on Friday, Stenglein notched the game-winning goal in a 6-2 decision. Saturday, he assisted on Taylor Cammarata's game-tying score with 1:07 remaining in regulation, forcing overtime and leading to an eventual 6-5 shootout victory versus the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
Shootout Stats
Going to overtime for just the second occasion this season on Saturday, the Black Hawks found themselves in a shootout for the first time since March 25th, when they edged the Chicago Steel 4-3 on the road. Taylor Cammarata scored the decisive shootout goal, both late last season against Chicago and in Saturday's matchup with Muskegon. Eamon McAdam turned away all three Lumberjack opportunities. The Black Hawks are now 59-40 all time in shootouts since they were first introduced into the USHL in 1996/97.
Cooper Claims Successful Stretch
Defenseman Dane Cooper has quietly been having a solid run for the Hawks. Although he is still looking for his first goal of the season, the Chicago native has finished eight of the last ten games with a positive plus/minus rating. Only once in that time has he been negative. His cumulative plus/minus since December 15th is +10, and for the year Cooper is +14.
Weekly Recap
Waterloo's week had a bumpy start with an 8-3 loss on the road last Wednesday versus the Sioux Falls Stampede. The Hawks recovered on home ice Friday, using a four-goal second period to vault past the Team USA U-17's, 6-2. Vince Hinostroza led the way with three points. Saturday, Hinostroza and J.T. Stenglein each scored twice in a 6-5 shootout victory. After taking a 2-0 lead, the Hawks rallied from three different one-goal deficits to force overtime. The weekend contests completed the season series with both the National Team Development Program and the Lumberjacks.
