Washington Defeats Windy City with Walk off Double
September 5, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release
Danny Poma's walk-off book rule double in the bottom of the ninth lifted Washington to a 5-3 victory over the Windy City Thunderbolts on Saturday night at CONSOL Energy Park. Poma helped Washington rally from a three-run deficit with a 3-for-4 performance, including three doubles. The Thunderbolts took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before Maxx Garrett clubbed an RBI double to score Austin Wobrock, trimming the Thunderbolts lead to 3-1. Washington tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning thanks to an RBI single by Matt Peters and a sacrifice fly RBI by Austin Wobrock.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jimmy Yezzo led off with a double and was advanced to second on a single by Sam Mende. With nobody out, Windy City intentionally walked Peters to load the bases. That set stage for Poma's heroics in the bottom of the ninth for the walk-off victory.
Making his 49th appearance, a single-season franchise record, reliever Matt Purnell (3-2) earned the win with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Purnell struck out four of the seven batters he faced. Starting pitcher Jeremy Holcombe delivered a quality start, allowing three runs in 6.2 innings of work. Windy City reliever Danny Jiminez (3-10) was saddled with the loss, allowing one run in two innings.
Washington improves to 41-54 with the victory while Windy City falls to 41-54 on the season.
