Warthogs Fall to Potomac to Start Second Half

June 21, 2007 - Carolina League (CarL1) - Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - A short-handed Warthogs team made a valiant effort, but their rally fell short as Potomac defeated Winston-Salem 9-4 on a rainy night at Pfitzner Stadium. The Warthogs, who were playing without Micah Schnurstein and Cole Armstrong, who were late arriving back from the All-Star game due to flight delays and Aaron Cunningham, who was traded to Arizona, fell to Potomac to start the second half of the season.

Paulo Orlando put Winston-Salem on top early with a solo homerun off John Patterson to start the game. The homerun was the fourth of the season for Orlando and snuck around the foul pole in left field to put the Warthogs in front 1-0. Potomac responded with a two-out rally in the second inning. Brett McMillan walked and Edgardo Baez reached on an infield single to puts runners on first and second with two outs. Matt Rogelstad rolled a single up the middle to score McMillan and tie the game at one.

The game was postponed for approximately 10 minutes for a brief rain delay prior to the start of the fourth inning. After the tarp was removed, the Potomac offense opened up with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Luke Montz walked and Baez lifted a two-run homerun over the left field wall off Clayton Richard to give the Nationals a 3-1 lead. Potomac would add two more runs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles by Chris Marrero and Montz to extend their lead to 5-1.

The Warthogs would not fall quietly as Robbie Hudson scored Adam Ricks with an RBI double in the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, Orlando reached on an error and scored as David Cook, who finished 3-for-4 with a walk, lined a two-run homerun to cut the Winston-Salem deficit to 5-4. That was as close as Winston-Salem would get as Potomac added three runs in the seventh highlighted by a Baez two-run single to extend the lead to 8-4. The Nationals added a run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to finalize the scoring.

Patterson, a major league pitcher on the Washington Nationals roster, was making a rehab start with Potomac. He lasted three innings and allowed one run on three hits, but did not factor in the decision. Richard (5-4) gave up five runs in just 4 1/3 for his second consecutive loss to Potomac. Shairon Martis (5-5) picked up the win for the Nationals as he tossed five innings of relief and held the Warthogs to just two earned runs.

Game two of this three-game series will take place on Friday, June 22 at Richard Pfitzner Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:35 PM. The Warthogs will send RHP Kyle McCulloch (5-5, 3.55) to the mound and the Nationals will counter with LHP Justin Jones (2-2, 4.56).
