Toledo Walleye News Release

Walleye Notes

Toledo takes weekend series from Utah: Toledo and Utah played for the first time ever this past weekend with a full three-game weekend series at the Huntington Center. The Walleye took two of the three contests starting with a 3-2 win Friday night that saw A.J. Jenks lead the way with a goal and an assist. Utah picked up game two, 5-3 Saturday night, in front of another epic crowd of 8,300 for "Don Cherry" night. A strong third period from the Walleye Sunday evening as they outscored Utah 3-0 to pick up a series-clinching win 5-2.

Number nine for sellouts: Saturday was the ninth time this season the Walleye have had standing room only crowds inside the Huntington Center, and is just three sellouts short of the single-season record (12, reached multiple times). The 8,300 was the seventh time in which Toledo has had over 8,000 in attendance. Every Saturday night home tilt has seen a standing room crowd this year (seven total). Toledo is averaging 7,055 per game (94.9% capacity) which is second-most in the ECHL to Fort Wayne (7,406).

Rankin pulls even with Rogers: Evan Rankin's third period goal Saturday was the 69th in his Walleye career which ties him with Kyle Rogers for the most in Walleye history. He is second to Rogers (177) in total points with 138 and second in assists with 69 trailing only the mark that Rogers owns of 108. Rankin has appeared in seven games this year in Toledo and is just 19 games from tying Phil Rauch (169) for the second most in Walleye history.

Berschbach runs his streak to nine games: Shane Berschbach picked up points in all three games to push his point streak to nine consecutive games (all in January) in which he has collected 16 points (7G, 9A) with a plus 9 rating. The second-year forward is just one game shy of tying the Walleye record for the longest such streak at 10 set by Anthony Luciani from October 18 through November 16, 2015. Only Chad Costello of Allen (17 points) has more points in the month of January than Berschbach and Costello has played in one more contest. Berschbach currently leads the Walleye in scoring and is tied for seventh among all ECHL players in points with 36 (13G, 23A).

Don't forget about A.J.: A.J. Jenks collected at least one assist in all three games this past weekend and currently has the longest current consecutive game assist streak in the ECHL at seven straight with eight assists total. The longest such streak in Walleye history was set last year by Shane Berschbach who finished the regular season with nine straight games in which he tallied an assist.

Two familiar, one new: An other three games in three days over the weekend awaits Toledo starting Friday night when the Brampton Beast roll into Toledo. The Walleye have a record of 4-1-0 against the division rivals this year. The Fort Wayne Komets invade the Huntington Center on Saturday night and have won seven of their last ten contests. The Walleye are 1-2-1 this season against Fort Wayne with only eight goals scored in the four contests. Like this past weekend, Toledo will see a new opponent on Sunday when the Quad City Mallards make their first ever appearance in Toledo. The Mallards are 6-11-2 on the road this year.

Promotional fun: Another busy weekend ahead for the fans starting Friday night with Veteran's Appreciation Night presented by Owens Community College. Tickets are just $14 for all members of the military (retired or active duty) and their families. Saturday night is Hockey Heritage night at the Huntington Center, presented by BCSN, starting at 1:00 p.m. with the Toledo Hockey Hall of Fame Luncheon. Prior to the game, there will be a special induction ceremony for the inaugural class of the Toledo Hockey Hall of Fame. The weekend concludes with another great Kids Day on Sunday as its Princess and Pirates night. There will be a pregame party sponsored by iHeart Radio and Laurels Princess Parties.
