Walker's Goal Not Enough, Phantoms Fall 4-1 MUSKEGON, Mich. - The Youngstown Phantoms scored first for the fifth straight game, but were undone by a pair of goals surrendered late in the second period. The Muskegon Lumberjacks carried a 3-1 lead into the final period and were able to stave off a late push from Youngstown with an empty-net goal to come away with a 4-1 victory Saturday night at L.C. Walker Arena. Nathan Walker scored the lone goal for the Phantoms (23-20-0, 46 points) who had their three-game winning streak snapped by the second-place Lumberjacks (26-14-8, 60 points). Goaltender Sean Romeo turned away 28 shots, but was tagged with the loss, just Youngstown's second in five meetings with Muskegon this season. Head coach Anthony Noreen said his team missed the presence of leading scorer Austin Cangelosi, who was out of the lineup serving the second of a four-game suspension. However, the second-year bench boss said that it did not excuse the result. "For the first 10 minutes of the game we were doing what we were supposed to do and got rewarded with a goal and some great chances," Noreen said. "But then we made some mental mistakes - veered from our system a bit - and we were never able to recover from it energy-wise. The game took a turn for the worse." Walker put the Phantoms in front on a power play midway through the first. John Padulo feathered a pass from the left circle to the Aussie winger stationed at the right, but his one-timer attempt went off the heel of his stick. Luke Stork gathered up the puck and fed it back to Walker, who teed it up again and drilled it glove side on Muskegon netminder Jordan Uhelski for his third goal of the season, but first since Jan. 19. "All you have to do is spend one day around our team and watch Nathan after practice fire one-timers," Noreen said. "You'll see where he gets it from. He's always one of the last ones on the ice shooting pucks from that spot. "Hopefully that goal maybe opens up the floodgates for him and gets him going." Christian Heil knotted it up for the Lumberjacks with 4:38 remaining in the first when he beat Romeo with a high wrist shot on a 2-on-1. The second was a stalemate until the final two minutes when Muskegon got a pair of goals to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room. Frederik Tiffels set up Adam Gilmour by himself in front of the net for the go-ahead goal with 1:51 remaining. Then with just 9 seconds left on the clock, Chad McDonald scored off a 2-on-1 rush with a scorching slap shot. Youngstown had an opportunity to cut into the lead late in the third period with a power play, but Sam Anas was called for hooking just 22 seconds into it. Shortly after, Padulo was whistled for a slashing penalty, putting the Phantoms down 4-on-3. They were able to kill off both penalties, but they could not recover and Brian Morgan added an empty net-goal to secure the win. "That's a very good team that you can't afford to make mistakes against," Noreen said. "But having said that we still had our chances. Their goaltender played well." The two rivals are set to meet again next Saturday and Sunday at the Covelli Centre, a fact Walker took solace in. "We really want to take it to these guys next week," Walker said. "We've beaten them before. We've just got to show them what we can do."
