Walk off Walk Ends Sharks' Skid

July 14, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

The Wilmington Sharks (22-14, 6-3) saved most of their offense for the last inning on Thursday night, when they scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off on the Holly Springs Salamanders (14-19, 4-3) by a score of 5-4.

Headed to the bottom of the ninth, it didn't look good for the Sharks. They were down 4-1, and only had five hits all game. Two singles and a walk immediately loaded the bases, all with no outs. Grant Koch (Arkansas) walked to bring home a run, and brought the Sharks back to the top of the order with Mark Donadio (Fordham). Down 0-2 in the count, Donadio hit a hard line drive up the middle to bring home two runs and tie the ballgame. The Sharks weren't done yet, as after a strikeout, Alec Bohm (Wichita State) walked to load the bases for Ryan Jeffers (UNC Wilmington). Jeffers worked the count and walked to bring home the winning run.

Before that inning, the Sharks offense was ineffective for most of the night. The lone run until the ninth came on a Donadio single in the fifth. They had a chance to bring the game even closer, but left the bases loaded. Other than that, Wilmington had seven innings with one hit or less. Holly Springs, on the other hand, produced a steady stream of runs throughout the game. They scored one in the second, two in the fourth, and one more in the eighth. The bullpen broke down in the ninth allowing two Sharks to score on walks.

The win went to Steven Powels (1-2). He threw two innings, with three hits, one runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Chad Sykes (0-2) took the loss, pitching no registered innings, allowing four runs, on three hits, two walks and no strikeouts.

The Sharks will travel to Wilson on Friday, before hosting the Tobs on Saturday.
