Walk-Off Sends Nuts to 6-5 Loss

Lake Elsinore, CA. - For the second straight night a walk-off single defeated the Modesto Nuts, this time in a 6-5 loss against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Thursday night at The Diamond.

After the Nuts (31-35; 57-79) mounted a late comeback to tie the game in the eighth, Ricardo Valenzuela started the bottom of the ninth with a single for the Storm (35-31; 67-69). He was sacrificed to second by Edwin Moreno. Chase Jensen drove him in with a walk-off RBI single off Craig Schlitter (L, 2-2). Schlitter worked 1.2 and surrendered two hits and the one run with one strikeout and no walks.

Josh Fuentes led the comeback charge. With the Nuts down by four in the seventh, he cranked a solo home run to left, his eighth of the year. In the eighth, the Nuts loaded the bases while knocking out the Storm starter Chris Huffman. Fuentes, with one out, smacked a three-run double to tie the game at five. Jose Castillo (W, 1-0) recorded the next two outs to strand the potential go-ahead run in scoring position.

Ryan Castellani started the game, his final start of the year and worked five innings allowing five runs. Luis Urias roped a three-run triple in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie. He scored on a sac fly. Castellani struck out three and walked one.

The Nuts head to Rancho Cucamonga to take on the Quakes in the final series of the season. The opener of the four-game set is Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. Listen live online.
