Walk-Off for West Michigan, 3-2
July 12, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Comstock Park, MI - After a pair of decisive victories in the opening two games, the Clinton LumberKings and West Michigan Whitecaps finally played a close one. However, Clinton found itself on the wrong end of a walk-off finish. Jeff Holm delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Whitecaps the 3-2 victory.
Clinton scored in the opening frame to secure an early lead. Dario Pizzano drove home Ketel Marte with a double to left-center, his 24th two-bagger of the season. Pizzano lined a run-scoring single in the third to add to his team-high 46 RBIs.
Rigoberto Garcia made his LumberKings debut with a fine outing. The first two batters Garcia faced each ripped base hits, a leadoff triple by Danry Vasquez and a RBI single by David Gonzalez. The 19-year-old settled down, retiring eleven straight from the first to fourth innings.
With Clinton leading 2-1, West Michigan tied it up in the sixth. Garcia surrendered an RBI double to Connor Harrell to score Jason King. Garcia departed after 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and five hits in a no-decision.
The 2-2 deadlock continued until the ninth inning. The Whitecaps loaded the bases with one out off Oliver Garcia with a walk, bloop single and an intentional walk. Garcia induced a force out at home on a grounder to Tim Lopes to get two away. The reliever could not escape the inning as the next batter, Jeff Holm, came through with a game-winning RBI single up the middle.
It was the seventh time that a LumberKings' opponent won in walk-off fashion in 2013. Oliver Garcia suffered his fourth defeat of the year, falling to 5-4. Cory Knebel took the win for West Michigan, his first of the season.
Clinton travels to South Bend for a three-game series as they continue their Eastern Division road trip. The LumberKings turn to left-hander Scott DeCecco (6-6, 4.40) for the opener, and the Silver Hawks counter with right-hander Brad Allen (4-4, 5.29). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM CT at Coveleski Stadium.
