Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C. - With the playoffs in sight and the end of the regular season only a month away, the Charleston RiverDogs will be without their three-spot hitter for the next few days as they prepare for a postseason push. The New York Yankees have announced that first baseman Brandon Wagner has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with an unspecified upper-body injury.

In a corresponding move, infielder/outfielder Dalton Blaser has been called up from Staten Island to replace Wagner on Saturday. After not appearing in the lineup the last two nights, Wagner would be eligible to come off the DL as early as Thursday in Lexington when the lefty slugger is expected to return.

Wagner, 21, has been one of the hottest hitters in the league in the second half and has helped the RiverDogs not skip a beat after losing their middle-of-the-order hitter Blake Rutherford at the trade deadline. The Hopewell, N.J. native has gone 39-for-114 (.342) since the All-Star break, good for the best average in the league over that span, while adding five home runs and reaching base at a .441 clip. His .297 batting average overall this year is sixth in the league among qualifying hitters, and he leads all batters with a .398 on-base percentage.

Blaser, 23, will return to Charleston for the second time this season after a superb fill-in stint back in June. The Roseville, Calif. native hit .311 (14-for-45) in 16 games, including homering in three straight from June 4-8, before being reassigned to Short Season Staten Island on June 19. With the Baby Bombers, Blaser produced a .225/.304/.306 line with one homer and 10 RBI in 36 games in the New York-Penn League. The Cal-State Fullerton grad was the Yankees' eighth round selection in 2016.

With their retooled roster, the RiverDogs will try to bounce back from consecutive losses to the Greenville Drive in game three of the series on Saturday night at 6:05pm. The RiverDogs will send right-hander Alexander Vargas (0-2, 2.37) seeking his first Class A win to toe the rubber. The Drive will counter with righty Bryan Mata (3-4, 3.29). The game can be tuned into on WTMA 1250 AM, online video on MiLB.tv, and live streaming audio on riverdogs.com and the RiverDogs' TuneIn radio station .
