Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD - Winnipeg starter Duke von Schamann (4-4, 3.68 ERA) pitched a masterful game, silencing the Canaries' offense in a 6-1 victory for the Goldeyes on Saturday night.

After putting up 18 runs on 18 hits on Friday night, the Canaries offense went quiet on Saturday, only managing one run on seven hits. The quiet offensive production was highlighted by J.C. Linares, who extended his hitting streak to nine games, and David Bergin, who drove in the Birds' only run of the day with a double in the eighth.

Sioux Falls starter Misael Siverio (3-6, 6.28 ERA) started well, retiring his first six batters he faced. However, he ran into trouble starting in the third. Wes Darvill and Casio Grider reached with back-to-back singles to start the third. After a Carlton Tanabe popout, Maikol Gonzalez walked to load the bases. Adam Heisler then reached on an error by David Bergin, allowing Darvill to score from third.

Siverio's toughest inning came in the fourth. He got the first two outs in a very quick order. However, Reggie Abercrombie reached on an error, and Davrill singled to put runners at the corners. Casio Grider then hit a towering three-run homer, his third in as many games, to push the lead to 4-0.

The Goldeyes added a run in the fifth and sixth inning to push the lead to 6-0. Meanwhile, von Schamann was cruising. He ended the day throwing 109 pitches over eight very strong innings, giving up one run on seven hits, walking two and striking out five.

The Birds' lone run came in the eighth inning. Jake Taylor hit a booming two-out double to the left field corner, and Bergin followed that up with a double that landed in almost the exact same spot, allowing Taylor to score from second.

The bullpen looked sharp for the Birds on Saturday. Dylan Thompson came out of the 'pen to throw one 1-2-3 inning, including two strikeouts. Newcomer Lance Fairchild, who was signed at 2:30 on Saturday afternoon, pitched two shutout innings of his own, not allowing a hit and striking out two.

Stephen Bougher (1-4, 4.43 ERA) takes the mound for the Canaries on Sunday. He will be facing Ethan Carnes (3-1, 4.28 ERA), who the Canaries have not yet seen this season. Sunday is Family Day at The Birdcage: kids will get to run the bases after the game and get autographs from the player, as well. Gates open at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 4:05 p.m. Contact the Canaries ticket office for information regarding single game or season ticket options by calling 605-336-6060 or visit the website at www.sfcanaries.com for more information.
