June 17, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Edinson Volquez threw a scoreless five innings in his second rehab start for the Hillcats and Lynchburg held on to win the first game of a doubleheader 2-0. The Cats couldn't complete the split though, and fell in game two 8-1.

In game one, the Hillcats capitalized on one mistake by Kinston shortstop Ronald Rivas to get on the board. On a groundball by Miguel Rojas with two outs, Rivas threw the ball in the dirt and first baseman Chris Kersten couldn't make the play. Cody Puckett stepped up next and belted his ninth home run of the season to make it 2-0 Cats.

Puckett and Neftali Soto are tied for the team lead in home runs, and the homer was Puckett's third out of the leadoff position.

Volquez had a great outing in his second rehab appearance. He threw five scoreless innings, struck out four and only one hit. Sean Watson and Donnie Joseph finished off the shutout. Joseph earned his third save with the Hillcats.

The Cats got on the board first in game two as well. Kyle Day reached with two outs in the bottom of the second after getting hit by a pitch. Efrain Contreras drove him home with a double to the centerfield wall.

But in the top of the third, Kinston struck for three runs. Justin Toole reached on an infield single, followed by Trent Baker who got on because of a Carlos Mendez error. Karexon Sanchez knocked his second homer of the series to make it 3-1.

Sanchez hit his sixth home run, and drove in five of the Indians' runs in the series.

Kinston got on the board again in the fifth. Trent Baker led off with a double and the next two hitters reached to load the bases. Doug Pickens grounded into a fielder's choice to score Baker, and Sanchez scored on a wild pitch. The Indians scored two more on a single from Tim Palinscar, and he scored on a Rivas double. In total, the K-Tribe notched five runs in the inning.

Lynchburg will finish the first half on the road in Potomac. The Hillcats and Nationals open up a three-game weekend series tomorrow at 7:03. Mark Serrano (2-4, 3.62) takes the hill for the Hillcats.
