Voit Vaults Memphis to 7-6 Triumph

Johnson City Doughboys News Release

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - Down to their final out, the Memphis Redbirds (4-1) received a mammoth two-run homer from Luke Voit to steal a 7-6 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes (1-4) at the Shrine on Airline Monday night.

Voit crunched a 1-0 offering from Hunter Cervenka in the top of the ninth for the game-winning shot to dead center field. It was the second extra-base hit of the night for Voit, who finished with three RBI for the second straight contest. Rowan Wick stranded the tying run at third in the last of the ninth to finish off the stirring comeback for Memphis.

For the fourth time in the first five games, Memphis grabbed an early lead in the first inning, this time courtesy of a Voit double that brought home Tommy Pham with the game's first run. Pham added to his tremendous start in the second frame with a three-run, two-out double, extending the advantage to 4-0. Pham and Voit combined for four hits, two runs scored and six RBI to pace the Redbirds' attack.

After a Matt den Dekker homer sliced the lead in half in the last of the second, Anthony Garcia launched a leadoff homer in the third to give Memphis a 5-2 advantage.

However, the long ball brought the Baby Cakes back in the game as a pair of dingers in the last of the fourth off Redbirds starter Josh Zeid knotted the game at five. Zeid lasted four innings in his organizational debut, allowing five runs on five hits, three of which were home runs.

The game remained tied until the last of the eighth when Matt Juengel's two-out infield single pushed New Orleans ahead 6-5. Things looked even bleaker for Memphis in the top of the ninth when Patrick Wisdom was robbed of a would-be game-tying home run on a leaping grab by den Dekker. Voit, however, came through with his second ninth-inning home run in as many days, leading the Redbirds to their first comeback win of the campaign.

Wick earned his first Triple-A victory, allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth, but bouncing back to close the door in the ninth. John Brebbia and Ryan Sherriff worked around some trouble in their three innings of work, but kept the game even.

The Redbirds now return to Memphis for their home opener on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. The seven-game homestand includes all-you-can-eat crawfish and Thirsty Thursday on Thursday, a new-logo performance t-shirt giveaway on Friday, postgame fireworks on Saturday, and an Easter Sunday that includes a postgame candy drop from a helicopter and more.
