Iowa Cubs News Release
TACOMA, WA - Luis Sardinas roped a bases-loaded RBI single in the ninth to give the Tacoma Rainiers (26-16) a 7-6 walk-off victory over the Iowa Cubs (18-22), Saturday at Cheney Stadium.
Iowa took a 5-0 deficit into the fourth inning, but battled back to pull within one. Albert Almora Jr. sparked the scoring drive with a leadoff double, which was followed by a RBI single from Matt Murton and another base-knock from Willson Contreras. Juan Perez capped the inning with a three-run home run, his third of the year.
In the fifth, Iowa starter Alex Sanabia loaded the bags with one out to force a call to the bullpen. Lefty Gerardo Concepcion walked the first batter he faced to bring in a run, but got Tyler Smith to ground into a double play to get out of the jam.
Iowa scored two more in the sixth to knot the score, 6-6. Tacoma sat down the first two batters of the inning, but Perez hit a double and Daniel Vogelbach followed with a two-run homer to give the I-Cubs a boost.
Iowa called on lefty Giovanni Soto to take the ninth. He retired the first batter on strikes, but gave up a single to Mike Baxter and walked two more to load the bags. Sardinas came through for the home team with a line drive, base hit to secure the win for Tacoma.
Soto was tagged with the loss and fell to 1-3 on the season, while David Rollins (2-0) claimed the win after tossing a perfect ninth inning.
Perez led the I-Cubs, going 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Arismendy Alcantara added a 2-for-4 game and swiped his 13th base in 13 attempts this season.
Iowa and Tacoma wrap up the series at 3:35 p.m. CT, Sunday at Cheney Stadium. The I-Cubs then return to Principal Park for an eight-game homestand, running May 23-May 30. Promotions include Dog Days on Tuesday and post-game fireworks Friday. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
