Vipers Snap Losing Streak with 121-110 Win over Idaho

HIDALGO, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (30-19) snapped a six-game losing streak with a 121-110 win over the Idaho Stampede (24-25) tonight at State Farm Arena.

Houston Rockets assignee Robert Covington led the Vipers with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Bo Spencer scored 23 points. Tony Bishop, Jr. followed with 21 points. Dario Hunt contributed three points and 14 rebounds.

Kevin Murphy led the Stampede and scored 22 of his 35 total points in the first half. Derrick Caracter scored a double-double 17 points and 18 rebounds, and Scott Machado added a double-double 17 points and 11 assists.

RGV and Idaho traded the lead throughout the first half. Midway through the second quarter, Spencer gave the Vipers their largest first half lead 44-38 with a three-pointer. At the half, the Stampede held a 58-55 advantage.

The game tied three times during the third quarter, but the Vipers were not able to steal the lead. At the end of the third, RGV trailed Idaho 86-84.

With 9:23 on the clock, Talton connected on a shot from behind the arc to move on top 94-92. RGV built its lead to 106-95 midway through the quarter on a layup from Spencer, and remained in control through the rest of the game. RGV won 121-110.

RGV will wrap up the 2013-14 regular-season tomorrow when it hosts the Central Division rival Austin Toros. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (CT) at State Farm Arena.

The Vipers will also host the Fourth Annual All-Valley Showcase Saturday. Teams are comprised of the 60 top girls and boys basketball players from across the RGV and will play East versus the West to conclude the 2013-14 season. Tipoff for the girls team is set for 1:30 p.m. and the boys will hit the hardwood at 3:30 p.m. Tickets, which also include admission to the Vipers game, are available for $20 at the State Farm Arena Box Office and can be purchase starting at 12:30 p.m.
