Venus Vs. Documentary Debuts Tonight on ESPN

Washington Kastles News Release

Kastles superstar Venus Williams is more than just a world-class athlete. She's a trailblazer, having changed the course of women's tennis when she challenged the long-held practice of paying women less than men at Wimbledon.

Tonight from 8-9 pm, tune in to ESPN or Venus Vs. -- an insightful documentary that follows Williams' fight for tennis equality.

With a deep sense of obligation to the legacy of Mylan WTT co-founder Billie Jean King, Williams lobbied British Parliament, UNESCO and Fleet Street for financial parity beginning in 2005.

It was her poignant op-ed piece in The London Times on June 26, 2006 that convinced many people that the Wimbledon tournament organizers were "on the wrong side of history."

"It is a shame that the greatest tournament in tennis, which should be a positive symbol for this sport, has been tarnished," wrote Williams.

One year after penning those fateful words, Williams won her fourth Wimbledon singles title and earned roughly $1.3 million, the same amount as men's champion Roger Federer.

Part of Venus Vs. was shot at Kastles Stadium at The Wharf last season in the hours leading up to Washington's 25-8 victory over the Kansas City Explorers.

This Monday night at 7 pm, Williams returns to DC for the first time since that match to lead the three-time champion Kastles against the New York Sportimes. She will also be in the lineup one night later when Washington hosts the Boston Lobsters.

If the Kastles defeat both the Sportimes on July 8 and Lobsters on July 9, they will set the all-time major U.S. pro sports record with a 34-match winning streak.

Tickets to see Williams and the Kastles play for history are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com.
