COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Kernels dropped their second straight game to the West Michigan Whitecaps on Thursday night in 10 innings. Danry Vasquez's RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Devon Travis for the walk-off. It was West Michigan's first lead of the game.
Byron Buxton gave the Kernels a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning with a 2-run homer that he hit off of the right field pole. Buxton's 5th long ball of the season snuck past the glove of the Whitecaps right fielder Jake Stewart as he leaped at the wall near the pole.
West Michigan tied the game 2-2 with a pair of runs in the 5th inning. The Whitecaps loaded the bases with no outs and then picked up a RBI single from Devon Travis. Jeff Holm's sacrifice fly followed to knot the score.
The game did not stay tied for long as the Kernels took a 3-2 lead in the 6th inning on a RBI single by Dalton Hicks. Niko Goodrum scored the run after he walked and Jorge Polanco singled.
West Michigan's Jeff Holm tied the game back up in the 7th inning on a RBI single into center. His single scored David Gonzalez, who had singled to begin the frame.
Hudson Boyd started and went 5 innings for the Kernels, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4 and walking 3. Jordan John started for the Whitecap and went 5.1 innings. He allowed 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 6 and walking 2.
Steve Gruver went 4 innings in relief for the Kernels, allowing 1 run on 4 hits. Tyler Jones (2-1) took the loss, going 0.1 inning and allowing 1 run on 1 hit.
