Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston RiverDogs pitching allowed just four hits in a dominant shutout effort as the RiverDogs snapped out of a three-game losing streak to take a 4-0 victory over the Greenville Drive on Friday night at Fluor Field.

With the win, the RiverDogs (64-53, 22-26) bounced back from their roughest stretch of the season, coming into play with just two wins in their last ten games and having lost their last five contests against the Drive (61-56, 24-24). Charleston remains 8.5 games back of first-place Augusta in fifth in the second half division standings.

After getting into trouble in the first inning, Daris Vargas (9-6, 2.95) looked dominant in his second straight start against Greenville. The Dominican righty gave up consecutive one out singles in the opening frame, but would finish with back-to-back punch outs of Michael Chavis and Kyri Washington to end the inning, the first two of eight total on the night to match a season high. Vargas gave up only the two hits in a five inning effort to pick up the win.

Former South Carolina Gamecock Taylor Widener spun four innings of relief on just two hits to follow while racking up four strikeouts in his third appearance with the RiverDogs.

Charleston got on the board first, disrupting Greenville starter Roniel Raudes (10-5, 4.16) with the running game in the third. After a pop out in foul territory was dropped by first baseman Mitchell Gunsolus, Charleston center fielder Ricardo Ferreira took advantage of the extra opportunity to crank a double to the right field corner with one out. Vince Conde followed with a bloop single to left center to put runners at the corners. With Hoy Jun Park at the plate, Conde broke for second, forcing a throw by Drive catcher Roldani Baldwin that opened up a window for Ferreira who swiped home to make it 1-0 Charleston. Conde would advance an extra ninety feet on a throwing error on the same play and Park added a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

In the fourth, Jhalan Jackson's leadoff single came around to score on an RBI groundout by left fielder Alex Palma that made it a 3-0 ballgame.

In the eighth, Mandy Alvarez added further insurance, smashing a home run over the Mini Monster in left field in a hurry for his fourth of the season, a no-doubt blast that made it 4-0 RiverDogs.
