Vanecek Named Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Month

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays, celebrating 23 seasons in the Lowcountry and proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL), announced today that Vitek Vanecek has been named the Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Month for March.

Vanecek enjoyed a stellar month, posting a 6-0-1-0 record with a 1.27 goals-against average and a .949 save percentage. Vanecek earned a pair of shutouts in seven appearances and helped the Stingrays to an 8-0-2-1 month of March.

Vanecek, who is unbeaten in regulation since January 23, blanked Greenville on March 10 with a 28-save shutout in a 4-0 win. He also made 20 saves in a 2-0 win at Atlanta on March 26. He allowed two or less goals in all seven appearances during the month of March.

The 20-year-old netminder is in his rookie season. He has posted a record of 17-7-5-1 with three shutouts in 31 appearances this year. Vanecek was a second round selection of the Washington Capitals (39th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and participated in the 2016 World Junior Championships for his native Czech Republic earlier this year.

This is the third time this season Vanecek has earned league honors. He was previously named the ECHL Rookie of the Month in November and was the CCM Hockey  ECHL Goaltender of the Week for March 7-13.

The Stingrays finish the regular season on the road this week. The club visits Atlanta on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. before heading to Norfolk for a pair of contests on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7:15 p.m. The Stingrays have already clinched a spot in the 2016 Kelly Cup Playoffs.
