Vancouver Whitecaps FC Weekly Update

February 20, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Vancouver Whitecaps News Release

Vancouver Whitecaps FC continue their build-up towards the 2009 season when they visit Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion club Seattle Sounders FC in a closed-door friendly on Sunday.

Already a month into their extended preseason campaign, Teitur Thordarson's squad have played the Whitecaps Residency team in a couple of scrimmage contests before defeating Trinity Western University Spartans 3-1 in last Friday's friendly at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex. Whitecaps working with Scouting Solutions

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that they have partnered with Scouting Solutions, an online athlete and coach development software program, to create Whitecaps Interactive.

Whitecaps Interactive will initially support the development of the Whitecaps players, teams, coaches and regional partners. Once established within the club, Whitecaps Interactive will extend to provide opportunities for community partners, athletes, coaches and fans.

"As an organization, we want to utilize technology to support the integration of our teams and programs under a true club philosophy," said Whitecaps director of youth development Dan Lenarduzzi. "Scouting Solutions software will help us to train, educate and communicate with our players and coaches, but also expand our development footprint through the effective use of technology."

Whitecaps sign Marco Reda

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announce the signing of defender Marco Reda. Reda has agreed to a one-year contract - plus an option - pending international clearance.

Reda, 31-years-old, joins the Whitecaps after one season as team captain of United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1) rivals Charleston Battery. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound centre back played 23 regular season and playoff matches for the Battery, recording one assist in the process. In addition, Reda was instrumental in the Battery's run to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final, where they lost 2-1 to Major League Soccer (MLS) side D.C. United last September.

Turney claims Premier's Athletic Award

Vancouver Whitecaps FC midfielder Katie Turney has been named as a recipient of the 2009 Premier's Athletic Awards.

The native of Surrey, BC, was honoured for her efforts on the pitch by the Province of British Columbia at an awards ceremony at the Sheraton Wall Centre in Vancouver on February 12.

A member of the Whitecaps U-18 women's full-time program since the fall of 2008, Turney was also part of the club's Prospects program, having appeared at the Idaho Invitational Challenge with the U-16 Prospects team in March 2008.

'Caps and BC Soccer showcase GMSL

Vancouver Whitecaps FC, in conjunction with BC Soccer, announce a partnership to support the Girls Metro Select League (GMSL) college recruiting weekend, which will take place in Coquitlam on February 20 and in Richmond from February 21 to 22.

The Whitecaps and BC Soccer will have key development staff from both organizations on hand to run the annual showcase event, which provides an opportunity for U-17 and U-18 girls to further their soccer careers by showcasing their talents for university and college scouts.
