Vancil Dazzles in Shutout

Crestwood, IL - Preston Vancil pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings in earning his third victory of the season as the Miners defeated the Windy City ThunderBolts 3-0. He struck out five batters and walked one batter.

Southern Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning off ThunderBolts starter Dyllan Nuernberg as Carlos Mendez hit a RBI single with two outs to score short stop Tyler Stubblefield. The Miners scored their second run off Nuernberg on a RBI triple by Ken Gregory with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to score Gerard Avila. The final run of the game came on a pinch hit RBI single from Jon Eisen in the top of the ninth inning off ThunderBolts reliever Andy Mee. The Miners are now 13-12 on the season.

Matt Sergey pitched 1/3 of an inning in relief. Ronald Uviedo pitched a scoreless inning in his debut, striking out one batter. Brandon Cunniff earned his seventh save of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout.

The Miners play for the series victory on Saturday at Standard Bank Stadium. First pitch will get underway at 6:05 pm. Fans can tune in to the Miners Radio Network beginning at 5:45 pm for the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show.
