November 21, 2016 - United Shore Professional Baseball League (USPBL)
ROCHESTER, Mich. - November 21, 2016 - The United Shore Professional Baseball League (USPBL) today announced that Austin Crutcher, a right-handed outfielder for the Utica Unicorns, has been signed by the Chicago White Sox organization. He will report to the White Sox MLB Class A affiliate team in spring 2017.
A 6'2", 200 lb., right handed hitting outfielder from Louisville, Kentucky, Crutcher played right field in 2016 for the USPBL's Utica Unicorns, where he was co-league MVP and helped the Unicorns win the 2016 USPBL championship. Crutcher is another example of the success of the USPBL's finishing school for players, which is designed to take good college players overlooked by the MLB draft, make them better, and get them signed by a Major League organization. Crutcher played collegiately at Bellarmine University, and in 2016 with the USPBL's Utica Unicorns he hit .301 with 15 Home Runs, 51 RBI's and 19 Stolen Bases.
Crutcher praised his experience with the USPBL, saying, "I had an amazing experience with the USPBL. I was really impressed with how professionally everything was ran on and off the field. The competition was much better than I had anticipated and the throwing program, in my eyes, is revolutionary."
Crutcher is the eighth USPBL player to be signed by a Major League Baseball organization from the league's inaugural 2016 season. Signings earlier this year included:
* Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers Pitcher Ross Vance was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals * Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers Infielder Aaron Bossi was signed by the New York Yankees * Eastside Diamond Hoppers Pitcher Chris McDonald and Utica Unicorns Pitcher Evan Piechota were both signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. * Eastside Diamond Hoppers First Baseman Dalton DiNatale was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers * Utica Unicorns pitcher Mitch Aker was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks * Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers Pitcher Hawtin Buchanan was signed by the Cincinnati Reds
"We continue to be encouraged by our success in helping young players who just need a little more training and improvement in order to continue to pursue their dream of making it to the Majors. Our goal has always been to make every player better and see them succeed at the next level and beyond," said Andy Appleby, Commissioner and Founder of the USPBL.
