USHL Players of the Week - Week 2

The United States Hockey League announced the Forward, Defenseman and Goaltender of the Week for Week 2 of the 2017-18 season. Team USA forward Oliver Wahlstrom won Forward of the Week for the first time in his USHL career after recording a hat trick on Saturday night, while Youngstown Phantoms defenseman Zach Metsa and Waterloo Black Hawks goaltender Jared Moe also picked up their first career weekly honors. Metsa dished out four assists on the weekend, and Moe picked up a shutout in his USHL debut on Friday en route to stopping 52 of 53 shots he faced in two starts on the weekend. The USHL is America's only Tier 1 junior hockey league, and continues to lead the world in the advancement of Division I college hockey athletes.

Forward: Oliver Wahlstrom - Team USA

1 GP: 3 goals, 0 assists, +2 rating

It was quite the start to the season for Wahlstrom, who recorded a hat trick in Team USA's 7-0 shutout of the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Saturday night. It is the second week in a row that a Team USA forward has scored three times in a game, as last week's USHL Forward of the Week Michael Gildon accomplished the feat in his USHL debut back on Oct. 7. Wahlstrom, a Harvard commit, is in his second USHL season and put up 13 points (9G, 4A) in 29 games last year as a member of Team USA's U17 squad. He was named to the CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in September and was also named an A-rated skater on Oct. 4's NHL Central Scouting Preliminary Players to Watch List. He is a native of Quincy, MA and previously played for Shattuck St-Mary's.

Defenseman: Zach Metsa - Youngstown Phantoms

2 GP: 0 goals, 4 assists, +2 rating

Metsa helped lead the Phantoms to a three-point weekend in Fargo, as he picked up a pair of assists in Friday's overtime loss and Saturday's shootout win against the Force. He was also a +1 in both contests over the weekend. The Quinnipiac commit is now tied for the team lead in points and has four penalty minutes to go along with his four points (0G, 4A) early in the year. The Delafield, WI native has spent time with the Waterloo Black Hawks (2014-15) and Sioux Falls Stampede (2015-16), playing in two games for each team. Prior to his time in Youngstown, he also skated for the Merritt Centennials (BCHL) and Milwaukee Jr. Admirals (T1EHL). He was selected in the fourth round, 57th overall by the Phantoms in the 2017 USHL Phase II Draft.

Goaltender: Jared Moe - Waterloo Black Hawks

1-1-0-0, 0.50 GAA, .981 SV%

Moe made his USHL debut on Friday and did not disappoint, stopping all 30 shots he faced in Waterloo's 2-0 shutout of the Dubuque Fighting Saints at the Mystique Ice Center. The uncommitted netminder followed that up with almost an equally impressive performance, as he turned all but one of the 23 Fighting Saints attempts that came his way as the Black Hawks fell 1-0 to Dubuque in the second game of a home-and-home series. The New Prague, MN native is in his first USHL season and previously played for Holy Family Catholic (USHS). He was selected in fifth round, 79th overall by Waterloo in the 2017 USHL Phase II Draft.

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the USHL celebrates its 16th season as the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league in 2017-18. 30 or more players from the USHL have been selected in five consecutive NHL Drafts, and more than 400 players on team rosters last season committed to NCAA Division I schools, further establishing the USHL as the world's foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
