Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release

Muskegon, Mich. - In recent memory, the Muskegon Lumberjacks have been racking up points and climbing the Eastern Conference standings. In the thick of the point-getting has been right wing Matt Berry, who's been named the United States Hockey League's CCM Offensive Player of the Week.

Berry, who signed a letter of intent to play at Michigan State University on Wednesday, picked up both the Jacks' first hat trick - on just three shots - and four-point performance of the season in a 5-3 victory over Chicago on the road on Tuesday.

Berry added two assists in a 5-4 overtime loss in Des Moines - which extended the Jacks' team point streak to four games - on Friday and scored the Jacks' lone goal in a 4-1 loss in Dubuque on Saturday. Berry has a personal five-game point streak, during which he has 11 points on six goals and five assists and a +10 plus/minus rating. His totals specifically for last week were seven points (4g, 3a) and a +6 rating. Berry is a Canton, Mich., native and a product of Belle Tire's youth hockey program.

Berry, a first-year player in the USHL, was a driving force behind the Jacks (5-5-3, 13 points) jumping from eighth place to a tie for third with Waterloo in the Eastern Conference in just a four-game span.

The Jacks kick off their season-long five-game homestand at the L.C. Walker Arena on Wednesday against the Omaha Lancers. It will be the Jacks' annual Education Day, so the puck will drop at 10:30 a.m. Teachers and their students can purchase discounted tickets by calling (231) 726-3879. For tickets to any Jacks home games this season, call that number or visit the L.C. Walker Arena Box Office. For more information, visit www.muskegonlumberjacks.com.

Doerring, Hjelle round out award winners: Defenseman Blake Doerring of the Des Moines Buccaneers was selected as CCM Defensive Player of the Week, and Brady Hjelle of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders earned honors as the Reebok USHL Goaltender of the Week.

Doerring dished out three assists and earned a plus-three rating, helping the Buccaneers extend their winning streak to six games. He collected a career high three assists, including a helper on the game-winning goal, in Saturday's 7-2 win over Waterloo. The 19-year-old also posted a game high plus-five rating which equaled a USHL season high. Doerring is a native of Chanhassen, Minnesota and is competing in his second USHL season after scoring nine points (2g, 7a) in 59 games split between Des Moines and Fargo in 2009-10.

Hjelle recorded two weekend victories, including a shutout, to extend his winning streak to four games for the RoughRiders. He made 25 saves in the 3-2 win over Fargo on Friday before turning away all 29 shots he faced in the 4-0 win against Sioux City on Saturday. It was the second shutout of the season for the 20-year-old. Hjelle has lost just once in nine starts this season and leads all USHL goaltenders with eight victories. The native of International Falls, Minnesota has compiled a 1.90 goals-against-average and a .924 save percentage this season.
