Great Lakes Loons News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - It was just another day at the office for the youngest player in the Midwest League in more than 20 years.

Thursday night, Julio Urias pitched five scoreless innings to record his first professional win, and the Great Lakes Loons got solo home runs from Tyler Ogle and Corey Seager in a 4-1 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps.

Urias allowed just one hit, a soft single up the middle by the (relatively-speaking) veteran, 19-year old Danry Vasquez. He also walked two but faced just one over the minimum thanks to a pickoff at first and a double play ground out. Urias recorded 15 outs on just 56 pitches (34 for strikes) and struck out five. His five innings was a career high.

"I was so excited because I did such a good job and so did my teammates," Urias told ESPN 100.9-FM after the game through interpreter Carlos Frias.

He said after the game that he communicates with his family daily via Skype back home in Mexico, and that the transition to playing in the United States has been made easier by the fact that he played in the US during international competitions.

He said his celebration over his personal accomplishment will be muted.

"I'm only 16. I'm not 21," he said with a smile. "I can't do anything. It'll just be a normal night."

After West Michigan starter Yorfrank Lopez limited the Loons to just two hits in eight innings last Thursday, the Loons struck for two early singles in the first off Lopez, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Miller.

In the fourth, Tyler Ogle connected on a deep drive to left high off the scoreboard for a solo home run. It was Ogle's eighth homer, with all coming this season on the road. Later with one out, Corey Seager followed with an opposite field drive over the wall in left-center for his fourth blast of the year. With two outs Joe Winker doubled and later scored on an RBI single by Leo Rodriguez.

Following Urias, Arismendy Ozoria threw two scoreless relief innings. Luis Meza allowed the only Whitecaps run on an RBI single by Vasquez in the eighth. Craig Stem recorded a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first save.

Ogle, Seager and Eric Smith had two hits each for the Loons. Frank (6-3) took the loss for West Michigan.

The Loons (19-40) and Whitecaps (28-29) meet for the finale of a three-game series Friday night at 7pm. Right-hander Angel Sanchez (1-6, 4.86) is slated to start for the Loons. Right-hander Jake Thompson (0-0, 4.76) will represent his opponent on the mound. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM (WLUN) and online at Loons.com.

The Loons are a seventh-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
