March 28, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) - Omaha Storm Chasers
OMAHA, Neb. - While Werner Park is home to the Omaha Storm Chasers, the city's two Division-I baseball programs will clash this weekend in the first on-field action at the ballpark in 2013. As the first of more than 20 non-Storm Chasers games scheduled to be played at Werner Park this spring, the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks take on the Creighton University Blue Jays this Saturday at 1 p.m.
The matchup between the Mavericks and the Blue Jays will mark the third consecutive season of UNO baseball at Werner Park. It will be Creighton University's debut at the Storm Chasers home field. Saturday's game will be the second of a three-game series scheduled Friday March 29 through Sunday March 31 and split between Werner Park and TD Ameritrade Field. In the previous two years, the Mavericks played three games at Werner Park but this will be the first as a Division I program.
"We are thrilled to be able to partner with the Omaha Storm Chasers, the opportunity for our student-athletes to compete at a great venue like Werner Park is terrific," said Trev Alberts, Director of Athletics at the University of Nebraska Omaha. "In our transition to Division I, recruiting is the lifeblood of a successful transition. The opportunity to compete at first-class facility like Werner Park has already made a big difference in our ability to recruit top baseball talent to UNO."
After this weekend's meeting with Creighton, UNO will play three more non-conference games at Werner Park in 2013. The Mavericks play Air Force on April 9, Kansas State on April 10 and will complete their non-conference schedule with Iowa on April 16. The first three scheduled UNO games this year at Werner Park against Northern Colorado were relocated to Colorado because of inclement weather in Omaha.
In addition to UNO baseball, Werner Park will play host to six area high school baseball games in the month of April and the Nebraska Class-A High School Baseball Tournament in May. The first high school game scheduled at the ballpark is Blair HS against Wayne HS on April 6. The Nebraska State Tournament begins with four games scheduled for May 11 and will run through May 16.
"We have always seen Werner Park as an ideal place to showcase high-level baseball in the Omaha area," said Martie Cordaro, President and General Manager of the Storm Chasers. "With the addition of the Nebraska Class-A State Baseball Tournament this year, we are pleased our community partnerships with the University of Nebraska Omaha and local high schools continue to grow and become an annual tradition at Werner Park."
The Storm Chasers 2013 home opener is set for Friday, April 12 against the Nashville Sounds, with the first of thirteen American Family Insurance Fireworks Shows this season.
