UFL Championship Game Location up for Grabs

September 28, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1) News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Wednesday, September 28, 2011 - The race to win the right to host the 2011 United Football League Championship Game is heating up as the regular season enters its third week.

The combination of fan support, attendance, social media integration and each team's winning record, which decided the venue for the 2010 finale, will influence where the 2011 UFL Championship Game will be played.

"This strategy was popular with our fans last season, so we will again allow them to help us determine where to play our showpiece event," said UFL Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE. "Each team will have played at least one home game and had an opportunity to impress on the football field before we make our decision and announcement in the coming weeks."

Fans of the Sacramento Mountain Lions, whose 19,938 attendance in Week 1 was the first sell out in UFL opening weekend history, have another opportunity to cast their vote by coming out in force at Hornet Stadium this Saturday when the Mountain Lions take on the Omaha Nighthawks. The Omaha fans, whose passion for the Nighthawks earned them the opportunity to host the 2010 title game, added 15,836 to the Week 1 numbers, making for a UFL-record combined attendance of 35,774.

Fans can help influence the decision by interacting on UFL social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter, which are listed at: [2]http://www.ufl-football.com/about-us/connect-us.

"We would love to host the biggest game of the season here in Sacramento in November and we hope our fans also see that as an exciting prospect and will help us win the right to stage the Championship Game," said Mountain Lions Senior Vice President JOE WAGONER. "Only the players can control the on-field element, but our fans can increase their social media activity and come out to Hornet Stadium this Saturday at 4pm."

In Virginia last weekend, the Destroyers fans underlined their passion for UFL football in Virginia as 12,167 braved the rainstorms that pummeled the east coast and were rewarded with a thrilling 34-17 victory over Las Vegas. The fans of the defending champion Locos will have their first opportunity to come out in force at Sam Boyd Stadium, which hosted the 2009 UFL Championship Game, when Jim Fassel's team takes on Omaha on October 8.

Destroyers Vice President of Sales and Marketing JOHN CASTLEBERRY said: "Despite terrible weather conditions and the team being a relatively unknown quantity, Destroyers fans packed into the Sportsplex last weekend and showed they deserve the UFL Championship Game here in their back yard. We've had great fan support since day one. Now we've got a quality football team on the field I have no doubt that this community would go all out to make championship week a memorable event for the United Football League."

The Destroyers (2-0) currently top the UFL regular season standings, followed by Las Vegas (1-1) and Omaha and Sacramento, who are both 0-1 and meet this weekend.
