UC Davis Health System and Republic FC Announce Partnership

July 22, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release

SACRAMENTO, CA. - Today, Sacramento Republic FC and the University of California at Davis Health System announced a new partnership establishing UC Davis Health System as the founding jersey (or "kit") sponsor should Sacramento Republic FC matriculate to Major League Soccer (MLS). The partnership also calls for the launch of a new "Built for Health Initiative" that will position Republic FC among the most innovative soccer organizations in the country on issues of health and wellness.

"Republic FC offers a unique platform to extend the scope and reach of our work to improve lives and transform health care across the Sacramento region," said Ann Madden Rice, CEO of UC Davis Medical Center. "Our partnership to date has been incredibly beneficial in terms of enhancing institutional pride, deepening engagement with our workforce, and strengthening our relationship with children and families across Sacramento. We look forward to building on that work as Republic FC seeks entry to MLS and launches their exciting new Built for Health Initiative."

"We are thrilled to continue and expand our relationship with UC Davis Health System," said Kevin Nagle, CEO of Sac Soccer & Entertainment Holdings and Lead Investor for Sacramento's MLS bid. "This partnership will not only strengthen our bid for MLS, but also advance progress on an issue near and dear to my heart: the health and well-being of our community."

Prior to his work on MLS, Mr. Nagle spent 35 years in the health care industry, most recently as Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Envision Rx, a prescription drug benefits manager with coverage of more than 10 million members nationwide.

The partnership will build upon UC Davis' current role as Sacramento Republic FC exclusive kit sponsor at the United Soccer League level, which UC Davis Children's Hospital has held since Republic FC's inaugural season in 2014.

"Since our very first match, our players and our fans have proudly worn UC Davis Children's Hospital over our hearts and across our kits, an organization that truly shares the vision and values of our club," said Republic FC President and Co-Founder Warren Smith. "As we look to MLS, Republic FC could not ask for a more committed and community-minded kit partner."

For UC Davis Health System, the partnership represents the latest in a series of major community engagement initiatives, including the Promise Neighborhood initiative announced last week for the Oak Park community. The expanded focus on community engagement reflects a desire to improve on the full "continuum of care" - recognizing the need to promote health and wellness at home, school and in the community.

For an MLS club, the jersey sponsorship is among the most significant, laying the foundation for all partnerships in a team's portfolio. With UC Davis' position in place, Republic FC is sending another positive signal about Sacramento's market viability to MLS.

As part of the partnership, Republic FC and UC Davis Health System will launch a new Built for Health Initiative that will seek to position Republic FC among the most innovative and forward-looking professional soccer organizations in the U.S. on issues of health and wellness. With guidance from UC Davis, the Built for Health Initiative will center around five focus areas:

1. Player Training, Development and Injury Prevention. From its practice facility to its training program to its health professionals team, Republic FC will develop the most innovative and comprehensive program in MLS for player training, development and injury prevention.

2. Stadium Design and Operations. Republic FC will build the "healthiest" stadium in MLS, integrating health and wellness considerations into critical design and operational choices around air quality, water quality, light, fitness and overall guest comfort.

3. Children and Youth. Through its community investment initiatives, youth soccer programming and Academy, Republic FC will provide health education and fitness opportunities to children and youth across the Sacramento region.

4. Community Investment and Healthy Neighborhoods. UC Davis Health System and Republic FC will elevate their existing collaborations in the community and neighborhoods, including partnerships with Way Up, Oak Park Promise and various school districts. Programing and awareness campaigns will go beyond just the beautiful game to include overall health and wellness for our region that also engages our parks, trails, civic amenities and neighborhoods as a whole.

5. Technology and Innovation. Republic FC and UC Davis will join forces to integrate cutting edge innovations in health, fitness and wellness, including wearable technology and industry-leading performance gear, to promote the health of Republic FC fans, players, employees, and the Sacramento community as a whole.
