Tyler Mahle Named FSL Pitcher of the Week

June 22, 2016 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Daytona Tortugas News Release

Daytona Beach, FL - The Florida State League named Tyler Mahle the Pitcher of the Week for June 13-19 on Tuesday afternoon. Mahle no-hit the Jupiter Hammerheads on Monday, June 13th, for the first nine-inning no-hitter in the FSL since July, 2013.

Mahle becomes the first Tortuga to win the Pitcher of the Week award this season, after Aristides Aquino won Player of the Week in April (April 25-May 1) and Taylor Sparks did so last month (May 23-29). For Mahle, it's the first time he has won the award as a member of Daytona.

It's the latest honor for Mahle, who was named the Midwest League Player of the Week with Dayton last year (June 1-7). Mahle was also named the Cincinnati Reds MiLB Player of the Year following the 2015 season.

The right-hander was a seventh round draft pick in 2013 out of Westminster High School in California and ranks as a top prospect in the Reds system. Mahle has won five straight starts and has not allowed a run in his last 16 innings. He ranks 10th in the FSL in ERA, first in innings pitched and strikeouts, and second in wins.

His no-hitter was the 20th in Daytona history and the first in Tortugas history. It was just the ninth nine-inning no-hitter completed by a single pitcher in Daytona's history.

Daytona's three Player of the Week awards this season are the most since 2013 (7). Mahle is the first Pitcher of the Week for Daytona since Matt Loosen (July 8-15, 2013), after he tossed a nine-inning no-hitter against Dunedin, the most recent one in the FSL before Mahle's.

Kevin Newman, of Bradenton, was named the Player of the Week for the FSL.
