September 28, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

Defenseman Ty Smith has been reassigned by the New Jersey Devils and will return to the Spokane Chiefs this weekend, as announced by the Devils on Friday. Smith was selected by New Jersey with the 17th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Smith earned WHL Western Conference First Team All-Star honors and was named WHL Scholastic Player of the Year after scoring 73 points last season, second-most among all defensemen and third on the Chiefs. His season featured 20 multi-point games, including a franchise record for a defenseman with seven points (5G-2A) in a February contest versus Prince George.

Beyond impressing at the Devils' training camp and pre-season, Smith earned attention at the 2018 World Junior Summer Showcase as he competed with Team Canada in the precursor to this winter's IIHF World Junior Championship.

He is expected to return to the Chiefs' lineup on Saturday night as the team hosts the Kootenay ICE at Spokane Arena.
