Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

SUGAR LAND, Texas - Trailing by two in the bottom of the ninth, the Skeeters could not complete the comeback with the winning run at the plate adding to their second straight two-run loss to the Revolution 5-3 Friday night in front of 7698 fans at Constellation Field.

Coming up next...With only two games remaining, the Sugar Land Skeeters (34-34) prepare for game five of six against the York Revolution (42-26) Saturday night at Constellation Field. Michael Nix (4-10, 5.00 ERA) gets the start against his former team in a matchup against former Skeeter teammate Derrick Gordon (5-7, 5.37 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT.

In his final start of the season, Scott Kazmir got off to a rocky first inning against the Revs Friday night. Brandon Haveman hit a single off the lefty into left to reach in the leadoff spot before advancing to second on a passed ball. Two batters later, Joe Thurston walked, and in the at-bat to follow, Andres Perez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chris Nowak drove in two runs with a RBI double down the left-field line to give York the 2-0 advantage.

Kazmir kept the game within reach before he was pulled by the skipper in the top of the fifth with two outs and two runners on the bases. Saul Rivera made the final out of Jeff Fiorentino on a grounder to short. Kazmir gave up both runs on just three hits but walked six batters to just three strikeouts.

The Skeeters tied it up on a big swing from Ofilio Castro, its All-Star third baseman, when he went yard for the second time in the series with a two-run homer (4) into left. Josh Pressley reached on a one-out single up the middle to help even the score at 2-2.

Corey Thurman got the starting nod for York, but was pulled after giving up the home run for the no-decision allowing both runs on six hits without a walk and three strikeouts. Stephen Penney pitched the rest of the sixth to get York out of the jam.

Rivera finished with two and a third innings pitched without giving up a run before Roberto Giron (1-3)pitched in the eighth. Unfortunately, Giron gave up three runs and the lead in the inning. Nowak was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth. After Limonta struck out and Fiorentino flew out to center, catcher Salomon Manriquez brought Nowak in from third with a RBI double into right-center field giving York a 3-2 lead. One batter later, David Espinosa hit a two-run home run (2) to extend the lead to three, 5-2.

Mike Benacka (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning of relief to pick up the win, but R.J. Rodriguez almost let it slip in the bottom of the eighth when the Skeeters left the bases loaded for the second time in the game after scoring just one run. With the bases loaded, Octavio Martinez plated Castro from third with a RBI single into left to cut the lead to two, 5-3.

In the ninth, Ricardo Gomez picked up his 17th save of the season shutting down the Skeeters on a double play groundout from Jason Lane.
