Two-Run First Haunts Revs In True Game Of Inches, Dropping Opener At Somerset

April 26, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution attempted to come back from an early deficit all night but were turned aside in a 2-1 loss to the Somerset Patriots on a cool, damp Tuesday evening in front of 3,863 fans at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ. The Revs and Patriots will meet for a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday before the Revolution return home to open PeoplesBank Park on Thursday night against the Sugar Land Skeeters.

Somerset grabbed an early lead, piecing together a two-run first inning. Trayvon Robinson greeted York starter Kelvin De La Cruz with a first pitch bunt single, and Aharon Eggleston followed with a base hit to center. Bryan Lahair pulled a ground ball RBI single into right as Somerset led three batters in. After a walk to load the bases, De La Cruz struck out Carlos Guzman swinging for a big first out. The lefty nearly escaped allowing only one run, but Brad Snyder's ground ball to second was hit softly enough that the Patriot right fielder was able to beat the attempted double play turn for an RBI fielder's choice, accounting for the run that would ultimately decide the contest.

The Revs endured a frustrating night offensively, stranding 11 runners and losing despite out-hitting the Patriots 7-5.

York's best chance to erase the deficit came in the sixth when the Revs plated their lone run. With one out, Bryan Pounds ripped a double to center field on a ball that landed in front of Robinson's sliding effort. James Simmons then drilled a missile off the glove of Guzman at third base, glancing down the left field line for an RBI double to bring York within 2-1. Simmons advanced to third on a ground out, and was set to score the tying run when Michael Rockett nailed a laser up the middle but reliever Arik Sikula speared the line shot for the final out of the inning.

The Revs also threatened in the eighth with a leadoff walk from Joel Guzman and a two-out single by Salvador Paniagua. That bookended two hard-hit line drives to left from Pounds and Simmons, both of which were caught as the rally never came to fruition.

De La Cruz (1-1) suffered the loss despite allowing just two runs and striking out seven in five innings. Seven of the lefty's first eight outs came on strikeouts including six consecutive outs at one point, while each of his final seven outs were put in play.

Keeping the game close, Beau Vaughan worked a perfect sixth in his season debut, Ron Schreurs retired three straight after a leadoff walk in the seventh, and York County native Eric Thomas rolled three groundouts against the middle of the order, stranding a runner in a scoreless eighth inning in the rookie's pro debut.

Gus Schlosser (2-0) picked up the win, stranding two in a scoreless fifth out of the Somerset bullpen. Starter Matt Bywater worked the first four scoreless innings for the Patriots.

Notes: Jason Repko (1-for-4) and Joel Guzman (1-for-3) each extended their season-opening hitting streaks to five consecutive games for York. The season-opening trend of low scoring games continued for the Revs, who have now outscored opponents 11-9 through five games. It marked the fourth one-run contest played by the Revs while their other outcome was decided by just two runs. Andres Perez became the first in Revolution history to play in 400 games with the franchise. Righty Mike McClendon (0-0, 2.25) starts the scheduled seven-inning opener of Wednesday's day-night twinbill, opposite Patriots lefty Efrain Nieves (1-0, 0.00) at 11:05 a.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK app beginning at 10:55 a.m. with Darrell Henry on the call. York righty Mariel Checo (0-0, 0.00) faces Somerset right-hander Mickey Storey (0-0, 6.75) in the nightcap at 7:05 p.m.
