Two-Out Knocks Doom Wingnuts in Opener

June 22, 2018 - American Association (AA) - Wichita Wingnuts News Release

FARGO, N.D. - Five two-out RBI singles powered the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to a 6-3 win over the Wichita Wingnuts on Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field. The loss snapped the Wingnuts season-long six-game winning streak.

After both starters traded zeros in the first, Fargo-Moorhead (17-15) moved in front with three runs in the second. All three came with two outs, as Tim Colwell, Maikol Gonzalez, and Devan Ahart singled home runs against Wingnust starter Charlie Gillies (2-1). The struggles with two outs continued in the fourth, as Keury De La Cruz plated Ahart to put the RedHawks in front 4-0.

The Wingnuts (20-13) finally got to RedHawks starter DJ Brown (3-0) in the fifth, notching two runs on an RBI double from Hunter Clanin and an infield single from Logan Watkins. The RedHawks answered with yet another two-out RBI single from Colwell in the bottom of the frame, restoring the lead to 5-2.

Fargo-Moorhead got to Wingnuts reliever Jackson Sigman for a run in the sixth, and the combination of Travis Ballew and Andrew Woeck kept the Wingnuts off the board for the final two frames. A scoreless ninth inning for Woeck secured his first save of the season.

The Wingnuts continue their series with the RedHawks on Saturday. Wichita will start right-hander Tyler Kane (0-0, 0.00), while Fargo will counter with lefty Will Solomon (3-3, 4.79). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM, and will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
