December 6, 2012 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) - Columbus Lions
COLUMBUS, GA (December 5, 2012) - For the second time in less than a week, the Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League is proud to announce that two more players will make the move to the AFL ranks with WR London Crawford and DB Cortez Stubbs signing with the Jacksonville Sharks.
After being the lone pass-catcher in the PIFL to cross the century mark in receptions (103), WR London Crawford (6'2 205, Arkansas) was the unanimous 2012 PIFL Offensive Rookie of the Year winner. Crawford had four games with double-digits in receptions, the most by any receiver in the PIFL and was also only one of three receivers in the league to top 1,000 receiving yards (1,044) landing him a spot on the All-PIFL 1st Team.
After re-signing with the club in late October, DB Cortez Stubbs (5'9 185, Concordia) was set to re-join the Lions after leading the team in both tackles (39.5) and interceptions (5) earning him PIFL 2nd Team honors in 2012. Instead, the defensive back will get a chance to make the squad on a Sharks team that finished third in the AFL in pass defense (249.3) and total defense (266.4).
"It has always been my goal here in Columbus to help our players on and off the field. I know our organization has a great reputation for being a stepping stone to the next level and our staff takes great pride in it," says Columbus Lions Head Coach Jason Gibson. "I get the most satisfaction helping our player move on whether it has been getting players coaching jobs at local high schools, the police department, or moving up in their football career. That's what makes Columbus special. London and Cortez are going to be missed, but they have done everything they can do in this league."
Late last week the club announced DB Ramon Broadway and FB Paul Bennett also signed with the AFL's New Orleans Voodoo and San Antonio Talons respectively. Last season six former Lions made contributions on AFL squads of which included QB David Cassidy who on April 12th of earlier this year led the largest come from behind win in AFL history when the Pittsburgh Power overcame a 24-point deficit to the defeat the Orlando Predators 57-54.
On Saturday December 15th, the Lions will hold their third and final tryout at Callaway Stadium in LaGrange, GA. Tryouts will begin at 9 a.m. and participants can pre-register online by logging on to www.columbuslions.net.
