Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- Three days removed from a seven game road trip where the bats awoke, the Defenders were stifled on Sunday afternoon 2-1 as the Mets split the two-game set before Tuesday's off day.
Starting hurlers Adam Cowart and Jose Sanchez were excellent out of the gate as both pitchers blanked their opposition for three consecutive innings.
The B-Mets fourth was eventful as they plated two runs on four base hits. Dan Murphy laced a double to score Fernando Martinez from second and Nick Evans brought Murphy home on an RBI single of his own as the Mets claimed a 2-0 lead.
The Defs wouldn't crack the score column until the home half of the sixth. Antoan Richardson led off with a walk and swiped his third bag of the game. Richardson advanced to third on a groundout by Ben Copeland and Travis Ishikawa sent Richardson home as he lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Connecticut would only muster one base runner in the final three frames as the Defenders lost their first game in five days.
Cowart suffered his second loss of the year as he had a very serviceable final line. Cowart lasted 6.1 innings and allowed just two runs on five base hits, walked two and struck out three.
Sanchez improved to 3-2 as he went 6 innings, allowed one earned run on just two base hits, walked three and fanned two.
The Defenders will hit the road for a seven game stretch in New Hampshire and Bowie. Connecticut will return to the Dodd May 19 at 6:35pm to square off against the Binghamton Mets. Tickets are available for the series at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
