Twin Tigers to Take to the Swamp

January 12, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Two members of the Towson Tigers will have to earn their stripes this summer playing at The Swamp. The Fayetteville SwampDogs have signed two players from Towson University to play during the 2016 season.

A.J. Gallo, a redshirt-junior outfielder; and David Marriggi, a sophomore left-handed pitcher will head south from the beltway to suit up for the SwampDogs this summer.

Gallo, a lefty hitter from Woodmere, N.Y., is a stellar force in the Tigers lineup and should provide a steady bat for the SwampDogs in 2016. Last year, Gallo led the Tigers with a .331 batting average and had steady power numbers lacing six doubles, two triples and three home runs. His .414 on-base percentage was second on the Tigers and his 30 RBIs ranked fourth.

Before coming to Towson, Gallo began his collegiate career at Saint Joseph's College, and hit .520 as a senior at Lawrence High School. Gallo was a three-time all-conference performer in baseball, and also lettered in basketball and volleyball.

"A.J. was one of Towson's top hitters last year and will provide versatility in the outfield for us as a guy who can play all three spots," said SwampDogs manager Anthony Williams. "His experience hitting in the middle of the order at the Division I level should certainly prepare him to have success in the Coastal Plain League."

Marriggi, a southpaw from Plains, Penn., may not be the most imposing figure on the mound but his craftiness and guile more than compensate. At only 5'9", 160-pounds Marriggi was ranked seventh in his class in Pennsylvania by Perfect game out of high school.

Marriggi has the ability to put batters away when he needs to, recording 42 strikeouts in 46.1 innings between Towson and the Woodstock River Bandits of the Valley Baseball League as a freshman in 2015.

"Dave will give us some versatility from the left side of the rubber and has good command of his breaking ball," said Williams. "He showed the ability to get hitters out as a freshman last year and I'm looking forward to aiding in his growth and development."

The Towson Tigers compete in the Colonial Athletic Association in N.C.A.A. Division I and are coached by Mike Gottlieb, one of the winningest coaches in N.C.A.A. Division I history. Towson University is located in Towson, Md.

In past seasons, several Towson Tigers have suited up for the SwampDogs, including Nick Natoli and Chris Wychock in 2010. Natoli played in the Boston Red Sox system for three years after graduation, reaching as high as class Triple-A Pawtucket.

The Fayetteville SwampDogs home opener for the 2016 season is Wednesday, June 1st . Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 910-426-5900, or by visiting www.goswampdogs.com/tickets.
