Turbin Slam Helps Lift Keys over Blue Rocks

Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD-The Frederick Keys (43-52/ 12-14) tied a season-high with their fifth win in a row in a 5-3 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks (53-45/ 14-14) on Friday night at Nymeo Field. Drew Turbin launched a grand slam in the second inning to help lead the Keys offense.

After Wander Franco hit a solo home run in the first inning, Frederick responded in the bottom half of the second. Shane Hoelscher singled to lead off the frame. Following a pop out and a strikeout, Alex Murphy doubled to make it second and third for Armando Araiza.

Araiza then walked, loading the bases for Turbin. After falling behind in the count 0-2, Turbin worked the count full before launching a Cristian Castillo pitch over the right field wall, giving the Keys a 4-1 lead. It was Turbin's third homer of the year, all coming against the blue Rocks.

Wilmington got a run back in the top of the fourth. Franco led off with a single, and advanced to third when Chris Clare could not handle a Brandon Downes ground ball. Keys starter Reid Love then got Chris DeVito to ground into a double play, but a run scored.

The Keys would get that run back in the bottom of the fourth, however. Clare hit an infield single, and Murphy followed with a walk. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, another wild pitch allowed Clare to score, pushing the Keys lead to 5-2.

The Blue Rocks threatened in the eighth inning, loading the bases and eventually bringing in a run. Franco walked, and Downes followed with a strikeout. Tanner Chleborad came in and allowed a single to DeVito and a walk to Chase Vallot. Pinch hitting for Wilmington, Jonathan McRay hit a sacrifice fly to left field, closing the gap to 5-3, but that was as close as they would get. Chleborad induced a ground out to Collins and retired the side in order in the ninth, earning his 12th save of the year.

Love (2-4) picked up the win. The left-hander tossed 5.2 innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on four hits. He walked one and struck out four. Castillo (6-6) was tagged with the loss. He also lasted 5.2 innings, but gave up five runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five.

The Keys and Blue Rocks continue their series on Saturday night. Frederick sends left-hander Brian Gonzalez (3-7, 5.56) to the mound. He will be opposed by right-hander AJ Puckett (8-7, 4.02). First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m., and can be heard on 1450 AM The Source, frederickkeys.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
