Daytona Tortugas News Release
Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (40-25, 77-58) closed out the regular season with a three-hit shutout win over the Brevard County Manatees (26-40, 55-80), 1-0 on Sunday evening at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Daytona completed a four-game sweep of their I-95 rivals and enters the playoffs as the hottest team in the Florida State League.
At 1 hour and 56 minutes, Sunday's game was Daytona's quickest of the season. Following the win, 2,301 fans enjoyed a 15-minute fireworks spectacular, the longest in the history of The Jack.
The game's only run came in the fifth inning, when LF Jeff Gelalich doubled home 3B Taylor Sparks, who had reached first base on a leadoff walk. Daytona put together three hits themselves, including a wall-ball single from CF Junior Arias and a first-inning base knock by DH Brian O'Grady.
The real story was LHP Seth Varner (W, 4-4), who took a perfect game into the seventh inning and allowed just one single in seven near-flawless innings. He racked up a career-high 10 strikeouts, using his changeup to counter the free-swinging Manatees. Clint Coulter rolled a two-out single up the middle in Varner's final inning to get Brevard County on the bases for the first time.
LHP Nolan Becker (H, 5) pitched a perfect eighth, and RHP Evan Mitchell (S, 8) induced a double play in the ninth to close out the win.
